Has anyone successfully used Airbnb to offset rent costs while traveling?

This summer I'll be beginning my career in big 4 consulting in NYC and with rent for a 1 BR at $2000, I was wondering if any consultants used Airbnb to rent out their space Monday-Thursday. Apparently, this practice is illegal in NY but I'm willing to risk it if it means pretty much living in my apartment for free. Anyone have trouble with landlords, neighbors, Airbnb guests, etc.? Any feedback is appreciated in advance.

In my experience, it's best to keep it discreet. If your neighbors start to catch on , the worst can happen is that they'll mention it to the landlord, and you should probably desist.

Keep in mind that you can choose to accept or deny requests on the basis of other people's profiles. If you have doubts about anyone, even just for lack of guest reviews, you can deny them. If the guests don't cause problems for the landlord of neighbors, it will probably go unnoticed.

You'll probably want to only rent to one guest a week, since you won't be able to tend the room in between.
