Using pen and paper during mental model interview
Hi
I am wondering if you get asked about xyz item impact on three statements, can you ask for pen and paper to draw down your logic and calculation?
How would this impact your interviewer's view on your quant skill?
Thanks
@longhourz", none of these questions should require pen and paper. $10 changes in depreciations, COGs, etc. should be simple enough to be solved in your head.
I got asked a more complicated number, was struggling to calculate that in my head
I think that if you get a complicated question (e.g. a DCF like TearsOfTheSun got), then the banker will just give you a piece of paper. But, if it's a standard "what happens if depreciation goes up by $10?", I would not ask for paper. Those questions should be able to be solved in your head. Hopefully that helps. Good luck.
Interviewed for Blackstone RX and a senior analyst gave me a bunch of numbers, asked me to do a DCF and give him a number at the end. In that scenario I was allowed to use pen and paper.
