Using python for fixed income
Anyone has used python for modeling returns? Any resources to learn this?
I just saw a few people on LinkedIn who work at large AMs describing this task. I'm currently an MBA candidate & CFA level 1 candidate, just trying to gauge how coding works for asset management.
Python is so important
yup :) WSO has a great course on this: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/machine-learning-for-finance-python-fun…
MBA + coding = disaster
It's suboptimal at best, but I won't say no for a potential path in.
I use Python regularly in my work for modeling. I would suggest looking into Leetcode and some other coding platforms to strengthen your coding skills overall. It is a useful albeit one that often is viewed as unnecessary. Having strong coding abilities will set you apart in the world of AM.
the dinosaurs in PM barely know how to use excel. wow them with your index matches first.
Work more with systematic equities but yeah, python is fairly ubiquitous. If you want to prototype investment ideas/signals, calculate risk exposures and/or manage large datasets, Python is typically superior to Excel. Where speed/latency is important, C++ is typically the go-to.
Datacamp and Codeacademy are both good for getting started. The former has a range of beginner level courses with a finance skew which may be of interest.
I'd add that you don't need to be a wizard with python to add value. Importing a .csv, analyzing and visualizing data can often be quicker and isn't that challenging.
