Using vacation days after putting in 2 weeks notice?

I was accepted to a new job that begins on the 14th of January. However, before I was accepted to this job, I requested off the whole last week of December. Now, I am in a weird situation because I don't know if I should put my 2 weeks notice at the begining of December (and lose out on 3 paid holidays) OR put the 2 weeks in towards the end of December, take my paid vacation and paid holidays, and come back and work a week in January before going to my new job.

How should I handle this?

Im leaving for Costa Rica on the Dec 21st so that means I would have to put my notice in on the 7th.. But that would mean I am missing out on 3 paid holidays (Christmas eve, Christmas, and New Years) That's almost $600 I would be missing out on so I am trying to figure out if I can put my 2 weeks in like a few days before I leave to Costa Rica, come back and work for like 7 days

At midnight January 1, 2013, shoot your boss an email and say your New Year's resolution is to move to Belize to help poor people. They get your 2 weeks notice, you get a paid vacation, and you have a story to tell the grand kids.

just suck up the 3 days paid vacation.... If not you look like a douche and good look listing your employer as a reference in hopes of getting a solid recommendation when it comes time to find another new position. Never burn bridges.

Have you agreed on a start date? I'd push it back so that you can give two weeks a week or so after getting back.

If this is literally your first vacation of more than a day or two and you've given up weeks of vacation unused while other people were taking them, people on your team, if you mention this fact, will think about things for 30 seconds and say "Oh yeah. You've never taken vacation. Fair enough". I don't think there will be bad blood between you and your teammates. Maybe your manager.

Some firms have a vacation day true-up when you leave where they compensate you for unused vacation days and reduce your final paycheck by overused vacation days. I worked at a BB and that was my experience.
