UT Austin McCombs MBA - Consulting Recruiting 2018 Update
Finalizing my list of B School to apply at the end of the year and thinking of making McCombs one of my schools.
I did research on LinkedIn and looked at their career reports, but just wanted to ask the WSO crowd - how strong is Consulting recruiting from McCombs? (Not that good from what I've seen).
Could anyone with first hand knowledge comment on how they place in MBB/T2 (location agnostic, but Dallas/Houston would be most likely I think?)
Additionally, I assume they have good placements into Investment Banking in Houston for those who choose to pursue that path.
Thanks in advance.
Also following. Gotta say McCombs has one of the worst disclosures on placement data among the top MBA programs.
I went to McCombs undergrad and am familiar with the grad school as well so I can provide some input.
Undergrad consulting recruiting : Very strong. All MBB recruit here, though they primarily take the top kids in the honors programs (Business Honors, Plan II, etc.) for their Dallas and Houston offices. T2 firms (OW/S&) also take a few kids every year. Most of Big 4 Advisory in Dallas/Houston is also pretty much all UT/A&M.
MBA consulting recruiting: Mediocre. I don't believe McKinsey has ever taken a UT MBA but I know BCG and Bain sometimes takes a few every year. But think incredible stats and undergrad pedigree - one guy BCG hired a few years back went to Princeton for undergrad and had a full ride to McCombs. T2 firms also take a few and Big 4 takes a lot. I think Deloitte Consulting was one of the top employers.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for this. Quick question - Do ATK/LEK/Accenture recruit at the MBA level?
Thanks a ton for the response but I gotta say that doesn't sound very good at all. Would you say that it's not a good idea to go to McCombs MBA if one's primary goal is to get into MBB consulting?
Probably stick to east coast/chicago if set on consulting?
I think mccombs is great in that it is the dominant school for one of the largest geographic areas of the the country. Its the go to place for Dallas, Houston & Austin positions. Probably gets overlooked. Additionally, it is cheaper to live in Texas and so the salaries stretch more/might not look as impressive in comparison to east coast.
Biggest demand for consultants is on east coast since theres a clustering of the jobs there and shorter flights.
I talked to a McCombs alum who works for Big 4 consulting, and he mentioned that the school "burned a bridge" with McKinsey, but that Bain and BCG still recruit there. In fact, one of the first year students I met last month is interning with Bain this summer.
Placement into Houston IB is supposedly pretty strong, but from searching on LinkedIn, it seems that Rice is a little more heavily represented there (could be wrong, as I haven't run any numbers on this, just seems like I see a ton of Jones MBAs working at BBs in the Houston area).
Yeah, there is something going on with McCombs and McKinsey because they take a few each year (LinkedIn research) from similarly ranked schools (Emory, UNC, Wash U or lower) but DO NOT take anyone from McCombs. Would love to find out the true story here.
