I've been predominately networking with Houston bankers, and it seems like the majority have gone to either UT for undergrad or B-school. I'd guess it by frequency, it'd turn out something like UT, Rice, A&M, SMU. If you search through GS employees on LinkedIn by school (including B-school names in each), UT outnumbers Rice 27-11. Citi runs has UT first, with mixed after that, TPH has UT first... you can run the search on your own after that if you'd like.

As for GPA, I would just list it alongside your old undergrad. Maybe like University of Louisiana, Monroe - 2013-2015, GPA: 3.8 University of Texas, Austin - Starting August 2015 (GPA n/a?)

I don't think that matters too much

Take this with a grain of salt, because I'm from the East Coast and it's just my speculation. You might want to send out some cold emails/inmails to bankers in BB and top boutiques down in the Houston area (TPH, Simmons) to get on networking with calls and get their input. That'll be valuable for you in making your decision, and it'll help you have connections down the line that were built on solid discussion as opposed to the standard generic cold call chat.

For what it's worth, I would expect UT alumni to outnumber Rice alumni (in banking) purely based on class size of the respective schools. UT has >50,000 students enrolled, whereas Rice as about 6,500. Yes, that's total enrollment, but I just grabbed some quick numbers, and Rice doesn't have an undergrad business program to compare directly to McCombs. Both schools place well into banking in Houston, but I do think McCombs may have slightly better placement in NYC. I would spend time at both schools and see which one is a better fit for you, and go that route. But, if you're wanting someone else to decide for you, go to Rice, I loved my time there.

For some reason when I said that I thought that they were closer in enrollment... didn't really think, which is also dumb considering I applied to Rice for undergrad...

Def UT for anything related to energy finance

I am a non-target and found a place in Houston. Most super days were split target vs non-target... Rice kids were all with me in the second round superday at at least one bank.

TPH guys are pretty open to Rice though, right? Bobby did his UG at Rice.

But in my networking, I came across a bunch of UT alumni, and I also know a number of UT alumni that were looking for spots in Houston. Everywhere I interviewed they were there.

Also, like everyone mentioned, reach out to a few people in Houston now and say "Hi, I am a X and saw you went to Rice/UT before banking. I have the option to transfer to Rice/UT and would be interested in learning about your undergraduate and banking career" or something better worded than that.

The people that helped me get interviews that got me jobs were all people I knew > 1year.

This is a great idea. On top of that, if you have some time to decide, reach out to current students at both schools via LinkedIn who are working in banking as interns or full-time Analysts and get their perspective.

Mc0015:

Thanks for your input! So what you mean by "Rice kids were with me", is that basically they were non target? Ouch. I've already started reaching out to alumni, I even came across a senior from high school that's doing his junior SA at GS/MS and he basically told me he was going to hook me up lol.

My problem with UT is not knowing what % of students that want banking that actually get it.

I just meant that they were with me at a superday and it was Rice kids and non-targets for Houston BB (basically non-ivy and non-texas schools) I've never asked who is a target and who is not, just sharing my experience...

Speaking to people on the phone will help...

Also, good on the friend at MS/GS... just remember you need like 10 people like him.. at least one at each firm.
