UVA Major questions

Hello,

I was recently accepted to UVA as a second year transfer, and I am interested In IB. I was accepted as a Math Major, but I am not sure how relevant math would be. Mcintire is out of the question because there are too many prerequisites for me to complete in a year. I figured being in the CAS school, Math or Econ would the best majors. Which would be better, a slightly higher GPA in Econ, or a slightly lower one in Math? Also, what courses should i take for better finance knowledge for recruitment this year? In addition, would the rosenbaum and pearl book be able to catch me up to speed alone?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to make the best situation possible.

Hi, as someone who went to UVA, I would recommend Econ if you know that you would like to work in IB. Math is generally understood to be a more difficult major but I have heard from peers that the high level math courses that they have taken were not applicable in IB. I know some second year transfers who were able to take all the pre-reqs for McIntire in one year so unless it is truly impossible I would still give it a shot. In fact I would take at least take financial accounting as that one course will likely be as beneficial to a career in IB as the rest of the econ major combined. Lastly, I think the R&B book is a solid start toward building a financial background for interviews.

I don’t believe I would be able to get in because the foreign language requirement is 2 years alone. Despite this, do you know if UVA Econ would still be considered as a target school for investment banking?

I would say that it is still a target school but as an Econ major it is important that you get involved in some of the finance/business clubs on grounds, the best for IB being MII, AkPsi and AIF. These clubs will help make sure that you’re aware of recruiting events etc. and have their own young alumni groups to help.

Also on the foreign language requirement, I hated that as well but knocked it out in 1st year as wasn’t a transfer. If you really would like to enter McIntire, I would speak to a counselor about it and see if they will allow you to take some of the foreign language classes now and some later. They’ll still make you take the classes, but I have heard that they have allowed transfers admission without completing the requirement prior to 3rd year before.

Do you have any evidence that UVA Econ places pretty close to McIntire? I have been trying to have this question answered myself, but haven't found any statistical or scientific evidence on the web and I have been scouring this forum.
