Are Rotational Programs A Viable Option?
Hey guys,
So I've recently been looking into rotational programs in addition to management consulting options (I'm currently a junior at Princeton). Do you guys know how the two are alike/unlike, and what are the good ones?
Thanks!
I guess I should clarify. I'm familiar with the nature of the work in both types of positions, I'm interested in more of what type of person would be best suited for each, what the pros and cons are, etc.
I'm not certain, but I imagine that while both look for intellectual horsepower and soft skills, consulting focuses more on the former and rotational programs more on the latter.
Given the choice between MBB and a rotational program, I think it would be hard to justify taking the latter. Both can get you into a top business school and/or set you up for a career in F500, but MBB will do a better job of both.
For a summer internship after your junior year, either would be great. I guarantee you that if you go to a good rotational internship and get an offer, MBB will look favorably upon your candidacy for a full-time job next year.
I think rotational programs don't get as much love as they deserve. As Enrico said, you can get you into a top MBA and some of the programs have developed a reputation unto themselves (GE comes to mind). It certainly isnt a bad fall back plan though I would imagine that if you have a shot at MBB, you might be better served to look at any number of non-MBB consulting firms before a rotational program if consulting is what you want to do.
That's something I'm struggling with right now: GE Capital rotational program vs. a top 15 consulting firm.
I would take the consulting firm, I think you will learn more, have a better experience, and have a better looking resume for B-school if you do some sort of consulting.
I assume "top 15" means "10-15"...
If your goal is business school, I'd suggest looking into the b school placement stats of both opportunities. I'd be surprised if GE Cap didn't place a few people into HWS every year (don't know what % though).
Value of Finance Rotational Program for BB? (Originally Posted: 10/09/2017)
I am an undergraduate finance student and have opportunities to work in Financial Development Rotational Programs for two out of the 4 BB (GS/JPM/BoA/MS). I was wondering if these were highly regarded programs and what possible exit opportunities they would provide.
I am NOT interested in investment banking at all.
I am deciding between these Rotational programs and a FP&A role in a highly-regarded tech company. Comp/benefits similar across the board.
Thanks!
I am sure someone with more experience will advise you. But if you search for "Big 4 Audit vs Rotation Program", there is a great post with that title. It has lots of information about exit opportunities after the rotation programs. Sorry, it won't let me post a link to the post since I am a newbie here.
