[VC] Advisory for Startups

For my summer before college, I decided to start a boutique financial advisory firm that current advises a small startup in Silicon Valley. I've been helping the firm with some really basic things such as financial statement creation and investor networking.

The firm is extremely early-stage and they have no revenue. They are in need of growing their userbase to start monetizing these users, which requires capital. There has been no money to market the company, which is why they need capital to grow their user base. So far investors like the company's idea but they want to see a more established user base so they can create do their valuations, understandably.

My question to you monkeys, is primarily oriented to the ones on VC and who have experience funding early stage investors. What do you normally/want to see from an early stage startup? What are methods for the startup to gain capital to create some initial growth, that appeals to later stage investors? What can I, as a provider of advisory services, do to help? Try to estimate the monetization and use that to project the financial statements? Should I keep networking with all types of VCs and investors?

What do you guys think?

Organic marketing. Optimise your site for google SEO and other search machines. Go out and start giving leaflets if need be. Organise some small scale events nearby or in a target location. Get public in some forums and bulletins who care about the thing that the company does and start talking about it.
