Vegans: Virgins and Nerds or do They Have a Point?

Not to get political or anything, but are any of you vegans? I'm a meat eater myself and don't plan to change anytime soon. Are vegans just a bunch of pussies who can't handle death, or are do they have a point when it comes to animal cruelty and the condtions inside factory farms?

Don't watch if you have a weak stomach!

I am not a vegan but I am a pescatarian, which means that I do not eat meat and have not for about 10 years.  For me, I choose to have a more healthful diet.  There is lots of evidence that plant based protein is very good for you.  I also get protein from fish.  I do not try to persuade anyone to do what I do unless it someone who is close to me and who needs to lose some weight.  I do think that killing animals for sport is a little strange.

Everyone makes fun of vegans and the like, but I’ve been thinking about more seriously recently and do realize that people who don’t eat meat do have valid points to make. Nowadays you can actually get the taste of meat from food that’s completely meat free. Also, I feel like hunting for your meat is better than getting it from the butcher. You killed it, and it didn’t suffer under the conditions of a factory farm.

If you know people who make fun of vegans, you are hanging with the wrong people.

Sounds like something a vegan would say...

financeabc I do think that killing animals for sport or to satisfy one's own nutritional need is little strange.

Well there are those who do it as a lifestyle - these are the annoying ones.

Is there a point to eating healthier and being against animal cruelty? Absolutely, can’t see why anyone would be for animal cruelty. Is going vegan the healthiest option? Probably not, but eating less meat and dairy would probably help on general.

one can be against factory farming and not be a vegan.  Ultimately it is an Ivory tower position.  People need to feed their families, meat is cheaper per pound and has more "calories" per pound.  You need less meat to feed a child than cheerios.  Do you know how many cheerios equal 1lb on meat, 10,000 cheerios(probably I'm just guessing).

Veganism is idiotic, people just need to consume less calories.  The bioavailability of certain key nutrients is close to zero for vitman K for example.  Which mean you can't get it from a vitamin.  Healthwise, people would be better eating grass fed meats, oysters, fish, and organ meats.  We need to get our factor farmed animals off of corn and soy feed.

I'm still trying to be a good person in relation to other human beings.

When I finish checking that box, I'll give veganism a try.

I've met a lot of vegans who are the other way around. Really good to animals. Not particularly outstanding to other human beings.

EDIT: My comments don't apply to just vegans. It seems always the case with morality and dietary restrictions for some reason....

For example, I had a Muslim friend a while back that ate pork and drank alcohol. Nicest guy that you would ever meet.  Would literally give you the shirt off his back as the saying goes.

Then, I've also met a lot of hardcore Muslims. No alcohol, no pork, hardcore on Ramadan, and a lot of them were just pretty average people. Not particularly more moral toward others. Some of them were even mean guys.

Which would you rather be, the first guy or the second guy? Met a lot of vegans like this. Super hardcore about not eating meat but toward other people are not particularly outstanding. And note, I don't mean to single out Muslims here....just making an example...seen the same thing with eating Kosher, fish on Fridays, etc.

IDK. many years ago, I had a close group of friends who were mostly vegetarians/vegans.  At the time, I was eating meat...Not one time did any of them try to persuade me to become a vegetarian or a vegan.  They did not feel the need to persuade anyone to live their lifestyle.  They were mostly a bunch of very successful Princeton grads.

I am. I originally tried it out after three months of dating a vegan. She was never pushy about it, but I just wanted to see if I could do it. I stuck with it after we split. I have been doing it for about a year now, and I just feel better. Could be mental, could be physical, or a combo of both.

It is definitely tougher to go out to restaurants, especially in the South.

I don't have a moral stance against meat. I just prefer the way I physically feel not eating meat / dairy.
