Volunteer opportunities for PE Associate

I'm a first year PE associate in NYC with a MBB consulting background. Wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations on volunteer / extra-curricular opportunities for someone with my skill-set.

For example, something like working with social impact bond initiatives, teaching kids about personal finance, etc. Just looking for something that I could actually leverage my skills in vs building houses or cleaning up trash.

a lot of the "white collar" volunteer opportunities are great, in fact i am a board member at a small non-profit. what i find most rewarding however, is volunteering at a soup kitchen or domestic abuse shelter.

mentoring a kid is awesome but serving up soup, bagging groceries for people in need or simply volunteering your time at a shelter is imo REAL. helps people like us stay connected to the real world. i highly recommend you do it at least once, it is a rather humbling experience

Whiskey5 we meet again...

I second your answer, one time me and my wife spent an entire Saturday going around town handing out care packages to homeless people. We made bags of food/snacks/toiletries in the summer, and did it in the winter one time with jackets/coats/gloves. It was awesome - people were startled and almost couldn't believe it.

Also, next time you see a homeless person chilling outside of a food store, ask them if they're hungry and offer to buy them a sandwich. By the time you get to PE, $10 means nothing to you, but it can make someone else's day if you take 5 minutes to help them out and treat them like a human being.

Look into Defy Ventures. They help convicts start their own businesses when they get out. The thinking is, if they were smart enough to run a drug ring or gambling racket, they're smart enough to run a legitimate business. You can either do one on one mentoring with a specific entrepreneur, or they have events which are basically like speed dating where you essentially read the profiles of the different participants' businesses and offer comments, advice, or point out flaws in the plan.

I volunteer at my local Humane Society and VA medical center. I recommend checking with your local VA, they have dozens of programs running the gamut from greenhouse work to music therapy.

I actually asked about personal finance education when I was deciding what to do at the VA. While mine does not have a financial literacy program, they seemed open to the idea of creating a program. I opted for a couple programs not finance related that were also a good fit. Your local VA could very well have a financial literacy program or be happy to create such a program.

Either way, it's great that you're looking to give back. It is very rewarding.
