Volunteering while working in IB
To the IB guys already working: Do any of you at the analyst level do volunteer work (charity, hospital, library, etc...) on the weekends? Or is this simply not recommended. Any input would be great. If you do volunteer, what places do you recommend?
Thanks!!
interested in this as well
friends have done big brother, I think its a one day a month commitment
I would volunteerily work on a pictch book for the analyst sitting next to me, which I dont have to.
If you are working in an analyst in IB I would doubt you have time, even on the weekends to volunteer. And if you do, the last thing you are going to want to do is change bedpans at a local hospital. Sleep, go to the gym, drink, something enjoyable in your minimal free time.
Let the MD's save the world, your job is to do pitchbooks, eat, and sleep....anything else is a luxury.
Gekko, alot of your posts are great but this is such terrible advice. If you can get through your job well and have the time to do good go ahead and do it. Many of my friends work at chartities, soup kitchens, etc. Sure it isn't often but it's better than nothing
I volunteer every second Saturday for a few hours. I wouldn't recommend it. You feel like you have no downtime. I was doing it before I started working which is why I still do it now.
The upside is that one of the guys I volunteer with is a prominent figure in the sector I work in and he has been very helpful in introducing me to people.
we're not saving the fuckin manatees here guys
Look for stuff that doesn't require commitment, because you will likely have to cancel often. Soup kitchens are a good idea. I don't know anyone analyst who is very involved with a charity though.
If you want to get your MBA and jump ship, you need to make time. There's no difference between someone who does Habitat for Humanity six times a year and someone who does Big Bro / Sis every weekend because every applicant will embellish the crap out of it anyways and no school will check up on it unless you make some absurd claim.
Wherever you end up, you will always have time to put in two hours at some point once every 1-2 months. No one works 110 hours a week, 52 weeks a year.
