Waitlisted at a boutique - worth asking to join at their next intake?

I'm fairly certain I'm on a waitlist at a respected boutique for an internship (HR said they're deliberating but I know offers have gone out).

The current situation I'm in is that I have a full time job and was really interested in joining these guys specifically. They do two intern intakes a year and considering I didn't get a ding, I figure they must've liked me but the other candidates were very strong (all the ones who made it to the afternoon were significantly more qualified than I was).

They've said they'll let me know by the end of this week - assuming I don't get it, is there any mileage in asking about the opportunity to join them at their next internship intake in ~6 months? I could definitely suck it up at my current job for a bit longer and make it clear to them that they really are my first choice.

Anyone got any advice?
