Wardrobe for young guy starting at Deloitte or IBM
Hi, I'm a senior in college graduating soon and starting at either Deloitte as BTA or IBM's Consulting by Degrees (haven't decided yet). I have a reasonably grown up preppy casual wardrobe, but I would like to acquire a monday-friday work wardrobe. I was wondering if, you all, as dapper gentlemen of the professional services industry, could give me an insight into how to do so, within budget of course (im heavily indebted to Sallie Mae). What are the staples I must have, what brands should I be looking at, etc. I am a pretty skinny dude at 5'10 and approx. 155 pounds. Working on bulking up to like 165-170 but its a work in progress so I like my clothes to fit slim. Again, how much should be professional vs. business casual, what brands, stores, tips, and general insights about how to dress right for a young wanna-be professional and stylish IT consultant. tips:
(1) black shoes black socks black belt.
going with brown for any of the above will increase the number of options. commonality is good to make sure everything always matches. and black is better than brown on the whole.
(2) non-iron shirts are awesome. wrinkle free or similar isn't as good. non-iron will save you a bunch in dry cleaning (when you pull out of dryer, it has no wrinkles), and save you time from having to iron. I just hang shirts in the hotel shower when traveling the first night and good to go for rest of week.
Socks match pants, not shoes.

To the OP: don't worry about bulking up. A year or two on the job will get you there, although probably not in the way you're hoping.

No, because I've been wiping my ass for 18+ years, shaving for 4 or so years and getting phone numbers since i could wipe my ass. What I have never done until now is launch a career. So i'd like to know this stuff.

Where do you guys go for dress pants and what is slim fit appropriate or feasible? Most of my presentable pants are slim fit khakis and I think i'm gonna need to be dressier.
I wouldn't do slim fit pants. But that's just me. And get some Allen Edmonds shoes. They are mighty swell.
In terms of ties...I would go with the slimmer ones. I think their more in now
Yeah slim ties are great, especially given your height/weight. However, don't get ties slimmer than 2.5"
Thanks for all the advice. It really helped. My wardrobe is coming together. Got 10 shirts from Lewin and CT. Ill get another 4 or 5 and I'll be set. A pretty important question that I need answered is wool pants/cotton pants and how many should I have in rotation. I know I should avoid black. Is 5 pants ok? If all wool, how many times should I rotate before drycleaning. Should I get some machine washable cotton pants in the mix to lower drycleaning costs? If so, what's a good amount to have on rotation? Thanks.

If you're thin, you'll want slimmer ties, slimmer suit lapels, slimmer fit in general - just to flatter your body. Big lapels look bad on thin guys, just as Jonah Hill looks ridiculous when he wears skinny lapels.
Socks match pants. It has the effect of elongating your leg and making you taller. If your work environment is a little more casual, you can have them play off shirt or tie.
You'll want navy, khaki, and charcoal slacks. Don't get black. Dear god that is bad advice.
Suits - if you need them, a navy and a charcoal. Keep it conservative, no bold pinstripes or anything flashy. Faint windowpanes or pinstripes always play, as do solids.
A blue blazer.
Shirts - cover the basics: whites and blues first. You can build out from there with whatever colors you like and fit in your office.
Shoes - Most guys wear (crappy & cheap) black shoes with everything. You'll want a pair of black for dressing conservatively, but the most useful color is oxblood/burgundy/cordovan - goes with everything except black. Another good color is a medium or dark brown, which goes with browns and blues.
5 pairs of pants is plenty, I had gray/dark gray/navy and I rotated those 4 days a week just fine. I went a fairly long time without dry cleaning them unless something got spilled/etc.
