Warwick or KCL for Bsc Management to get into consulting?
Hi! I have to choose my firm choice. I would like to go to London but I also would like to choose the best uni to get my foot in the door into a strategy consulting career.
What are your thoughts? Thank you
Warwick>KCL, warwick is a target for IB and good semi-target for MBB, KCL is a semi target for IB, and ok semi-target for MBB.
Think also about where you want to live and the costs associated with it (London vs middle of england).
Warwick's miles ahead, no-brainer unless you've got a serious fetish for London
I was in a similar situation as you while making uni choices, I chose KCL at the end, currently have a career lined up at a BB if all goes well. I will try give my unbiased views here-
WBS is better established and connected as compared to KBS as the latter is a fairly new department which has now begun to gain traction among companies in the finance/consulting industry. However overall, King’s has a bigger brand name than Warwick.
WBS is a target uni whereas King’s is a semi-target for the industry meaning companies recruit more from Warwick than King’s. They would also have official campus visits, company presentations more at Warwick. So to break into the industry while at King’s, you put in slightly more efforts building your profile.
As a result, at WBS, you’ll be more surrounded with students wanting a job at consultancy/finance- hence more mutually beneficial conversations regarding workshops, CV building, etc. i.e. a surrounding that will push you more. King’s does have a very similar vibe but it is a little subdued.
But being in London was important for me because I had ample networking events, talks, discussions, recruitment events, coffee chats with professionals etc. become more accessible to me. In addition to tapping on great resources by King’s, I could always go down the road and attend great events by societies across LSE, UCL, and even Imperial and make friends there.
Coming from a small town abroad, I preferred living in a big city because I wished to have a life out of uni and mature better. Albeit the expenses, I could gain more holistically from the fast London lifestyle, and have 1092726+ options to destress when needed.
I have no regrets over my choice now, I love my department, the general King’s community and the resources that I could benefit from at the uni as well as London.
I hope this helps you in some way, good luck for your decision!
Thank you so much! I am from Italy and I don't see myself living in a small town, so I would prefer to study in London. Besides, I visited KBS and I really loved it. On the other hand, I want to choose the best uni in terms of better future career prospects. As you said, in London I would have to work harder to build my profile but I assume that there are plenty of opportunities to do that. King's has also a better brand name than Warwick...maybe international companies would prefer KCL on the CV? Do you think that it's still possible to get into one of the Big 4 after a degree from KCL and a strong profile?
You can get into B4 from any uni. It really depends on your performance in the application process.
Btw I'm B4 from KCL. Looking to switch to consulting MBB/T2
As someone who studied , I have to say I've seen more people from WBS than KBS. KBS is growing in popularity and the same question in 2-3 years may yield a different answer, but WBS is the way to go for now.
Kings is a great university and may be ideal if you really want to be in London. However, as far as the academic experience goes, Bath/Warwick are the best in my view for business. I was accepted to all three and ended up going to Bath/Warwick. Now at a BB in London
Warwick:
Better name brand for IB and consulting, also better domestic reputation. Places heavily into FO roles. Keep in mind I do know of Warwick Econ grads with 1sts who have nothing lined up for post-grad. So not a guarantee.
KCL:
Worse domestic rep + brand for IB. Better international reputation. Places decently into FO roles (i.e, there are KCL business management students going to pretty much all BBs/BSBs for SA). Have to distinguish yourself heavily though.
Also consider social life; campus uni vs central london, expenses, etc. I'm a KCL student and have enjoyed my time here, but it can be quite isolating. But, Warwick is in the middle of fcking nowhere.
Lots of my coursemates are going into IB and Consulting, so if you get a 1st/ high 2.1 and have some experience it's a very doable path. KCL Management also has higher entry req's as compared to Warwick's Management (A*AA vs AAA) - ultimately doesn't matter though.
I would recommend seeing if UCL have any clearing spots for their management course. Lower entry req's than KCL (AAA), but much better brand name and UCL places everywhere in IB, period.
edit: Was at a Strategy Consulting AC this year where half the kids being interviewed were from King's (more than LSE and Oxbridge). You can 100% get an interview from KCL. For probably the most desired T2 strategy firm.
