Given your constraints, I'd go for one of the following options: - No watch. - A $30 Timex like this one. Something tasteful/conservative to tell the time and not draw attention.

For $300 you won't find many tastefully styled watches that also have a proper movement i.e. Automatic/Mechanical watches, as opposed to a quartz movements. If you can find a watch you like that has a mechanical movement and is under $300, go for it. I don't see the point in spending more than $50-$100 on a watch with a quartz movement unless you really, really fall in love with the styling because that's all you are paying for. Don't get caught up in the marketing or keeping up with others.

The key thing for a watch you'll wear in the office is that you want it to be conservative and not draw attention. You're a student, have you considered going watch-less in the office and spending the money on something fun you can wear socially?

Check eBay for a great deal on anything with a proper movement. I have a thing for 60's rolex just because they are thin and small, and designed for a leather band.

Or go with Skagen as someone suggested above. Quite conservative, light, and again leather straps.

If you can save the metal band watches for your own time and stick to leather that matches your suit for work.

What's the best way to tell if a Rolex on ebay is real? How much do you expect to pay for a 60s rolex?

Oh, if you're not fussy about the name and want something you typically have to pay a lot more for, check this out: http://usseagull.com/EnProductShow.asp?ClassID=93&ID=132

Sea-Gull is a Chinese brand, and they actually make a lot of movements for other companies. That means they make things in-house (re: not buy stock movements, they make their own).

I've seen some of these in person, and I was pretty impressed for the price. i have yet to pull the trigger on getting one - partly because I do have hesitations on its name (not the brand, but the actual name they chose to use 'sea gull'). But i've heard good things about them. They've also made this one watch that was a Chinese army-issue watch. A lot of watch enthusiasts want to get their hands on it.
