Watches: PP Calatrava v R Daytona

I am looking to buy a new watch - will be primarily my dress watch and occasionally used on the odd day at the office.

The choices are:

Patek Philippe - Calatrava, Gold bezel with black or brown strap:

Rolex - Daytona, Gold on brown:

My day to day watch is a rolex (a quite subtle one though), but I like the brand so no issue with having another. I love the Daytona, think its great, but the PP is awesome as a dress watch, so classy & smart.... so really tempted by it. What are your thoughts as to which would be best suited for dress/occasional use?

LTV:
I own one similar to 1 (not PP, but similar brand). Absolutely love it, and wear it quite often. It's very classy and not flashy, so makes for a great day-to-day dress watch. 2's a lovely watch too for a casual setting; just not subtle enough for my personal taste when it comes to formal wear.

Yes I think you are right, as a dress watch the PP is far better suited.

I would rather the Daytona for day-to-day, bit more sturdy if nothing else, but as I already have my daily rolex I suppose it would make a lot more sense to go for the Patek at the moment. Will maybe consider upgrading my daily to the Daytona at the same time if they would offer a really good deal on buying both though.

I would go for the PP. It is much, much subtler and is very classy. The Rolex Daytona, in my opinion, is not Rolex's finest work. The numerous dials and busy face strike me as cheap Citizen. Don't get me wrong, I love the Rolex brand and I do in fact wear a GMT Master II daily, I just feel that the Daytona is not at all a dress watch.

Yeah I totally get that, I did really want a GMT II myself - one of my favourite Rolex designs, especially in gold/steel with the black face, stunning - but as I train at the gym a fair bit it looks too small on my wrists, so I have to get bigger watches usually.

Think you are all right though, and I know it myself really, the Daytona is not really suited at all for wearing as a dress watch whereas the Patek is perfect, just I love the Daytona and need an excuse to get one when i've already got the daily haha.

I like Franck Mueller for dressier watches
I walked into their store earlier this month. I REALLY admire their watches, especially with the blue Master Banker with curved case, even though they're not my style exactly nor my price range.

^^^^ Very good choice on the IWC, I'm pretty sure that would be around the same price range as choices 1 and 2. But sticking to OP's question, I would really pick the patek over the rolex, both as a personal preference and also as an aesthetic one between the two watches. The Patek is way more subtle and slick, can be easily dressed up or down I feel and will always draw the attention of people who know a thing or two about watches. That being said, it's you that will dish out a good couple grand for it and I've learned that with these things you can't be too hasty, take your time and look around, who knows maybe something else will catch your attention. Rxfm3, have you considered anything from Breitling?

I'd never wear a watch with a blue leather strap, but man did it look good.

Anyone have anything they like in terms of Chronographs that aren't overly bulky but also not too formal?

I like Tissot's if you're looking for something totally casual and for every day use. You can get a nice chronograph Tissot for under 1K.

Whats your budget? Baume makes a few chronographs that can be picked up fairly cheap (42mm or so). Paneri Luminor also makes a very nice watch (~40mm) although im not a big fan. My buddy just picked up a Breguet XXI rose gold, pretty interesting watch, first one I have ever seen.

or..... you could see if that dude from the jersey shore who gave snooki her fossil could hook you up
