Wearing Deal Sleds or Loafers as an Intern
Would love to rock some this summer. Also any recommendations or guidelines in regards to the ankle hair? Trimmed?
Can I Wear Fancy Shoes as an Intern on Wall Street?
As a rule - you should be conservative when selecting your shoes as an intern. Even if junior analysts are wearing "deal sleds" - it is much safer to wear a basic, conservative shoe as there will be no one that will have an issue with you.
You likely should not come in on day one wearing the below shoes.

No one cares about your ankle hair. Do whatever you want with it.
Don't be too insecure. Wear what you want but you'll always run the risk of being criticized.
At the bank I interned at, ankle hair was expected to be between 0.6 to 0.7 inches at all times. Any deviation from this was grounds for immediate termination.
I was told bulge brackets have allowed as much as .835in as part of their analyst retention programs, but if someone wants to weigh in on EBs as well, that'd be great.
EBs guarantee as much as 0.85in; heard through the rumor-mill you can negotiate to 0.9in. But expect to be told what socks to wear.
I cant tell if you're being serious or not. Is that a SEC law or compliance?

That must be the guideline for American banks. The European bank I interned at enforced a strict 0.7-0.8 inches threshold for their NYC office.
I think you're getting the ankle hair length confused with the euro bank rules for maximum jacket lapel widths... they like them narrow.
What's to note here is a lot of people found it helpful
No, you don't wear loafers to the office. Who do you think you are? You must be confusing an investment bank for a hedge fund.
Real talk, I’m at a BB, and we would definitely judge any intern for wearing loafers.
So fucking stupid.
What about the Patagonia vests?
No one cares about you. Dont stand out.
fuckin ankle hair, im deleting my account
Braid your ankle hair, ideally into the bit of your loafers
Veins bro
arbitrage andy? is that you?
Arbitrage Andy and NYFB are going to get a lot of interns fucking roasted this summer. I can't wait.
Edit: this post got spread to some of the FinMeme accounts, shoutsout to my boy Andy and NYFB.
Read the book: From Main Street to Wall Street - A Beginners Guide to Success On The Street.
It does a pretty good job of explaining what you should, and should not wear to the office.

I'd take it easy on going sockless until you get a feel for what is and is not appropriate.
If you don't wear no show socks and show your veiny boys, do you really even fuhnance?
I'd first focus on the job and being any good at that before #Fashun
Rock those loafers if it makes you feel better it should make you work better. If it is work appropriate were it.
As an intern I always try to keep everything I wear pretty conservative. But do you.
Loafers as an intern (Originally Posted: 06/15/2014)
Where do you guys get your loafers? I'm looking for something not too expensive and acceptable to wear as an intern. Don't want to be wearing Gucci/Ferragamo and pissing off guys above me.
Get any you want except for the super expensive ones....
For the record, as long as you're not super showy with your clothes people don't really care (and people on WSO make a bigger deal out of it than it is). I wore Burberry ties pretty often, and a tie bar every day, for example, and got the FT offer and had no issues
Loake
I own some AE Italian loafers, you can find them as low as $200, but they are typicalyl $240 on sale. Right now AE is running a massive shoebank sale so check it out.
Are Allen Edmonds loafers too showy for first-year analysts at a middle market bank?
Honestly, just get some loafers you like. AE makes some good understand italian loafers. Go to Century 21 and pick up some good looking ones on clearance and you'll be good for the summer.
To the main point of the post though, no one cares what you dress like. Senior guys will not get "pissed off" by pretty much anything aside from you being stupid or not working hard.
We give offers to guys who intern and have more money than most MDs and also to charity cases. Don't be a d-bag and your clothes don't matter.
