What are my chances at Tier 2/3 Consulting Firms?
Hello! I wanted to know what are my chances at Tier 2/3 consulting firms with my current credentials. I know looking at Deloitte S&0 and S& is hopeful but doesn't hurt to dream! I go to a non-target school (Rutgers University) and am double majoring in Finance and Economics. I am currently a rising junior with a 3.7 GPA and 3.93 major GPA. I switched from Pre-Med to Finance and Economics after my freshman year and have been taking as many credits as possible to catch up and lift my GPA (hence the difference between cumulative and major GPA). Unfortunately, I was not able to land an internship for this summer and am starting to get a bit worried about how I am going to stand out to recruiters. Thank you all for your input and please give me any and all advice!
Right now, your top priority is probably to find an internship for the summer. Not having a sophomore internship makes it a lot more difficult to get a junior consulting internship, which will make it a lot more difficult to get a full-time consulting job, and so on and so forth.
Honestly, your internship really doesn't have to be anything good. Most people do completely random things in their sophomore summers, and then wildly embellish during interviews the following year. For instance, I worked an unpaid sophomore internship at a 3-person boutique investment bank that was so small that it had no official hiring process: I emailed the managing director in late April asking for a job, and he essentially hired me on the spot after a brief screening phone call. And I basically did no real work that whole summer. What's important is that I had something to fill the gap on my resume.
Decent GPA from Rutgers does not sound that bad, to be honest. Find something for the summer and be ready to sell it to recruiters for your next internship.
