Breaking into Asset Management out of undergrad?
I know its very difficult to break into a hf out of ug, but what are the chances of breaking into a decent asset managment firm out of a semi target ug?

What do you consider a "decent" AM firm?
I don't know how do you define a semi-target, but I did receive a lot of interviews from top tier AM firms(BlackRock, Fidelity etc) in the SA recruiting season. So i think it's possible if you can demonstrate your passion of investing in your resume/application. Also people from AM firms told me they do not really care that much about the previous internship experience as long as you have the "true" passion of investing.
I've been turned down by a couple AM shops in my home down ( internships because though they could clearly see my passion for the markets/investing, I didn't have the modeling experience they needed their interns to have.
Definitely wouldn't be a bad call to either take the BIWS modeling course(s) or spend the summer doing ER and then going after an AM internship.
Well if you are more of a fundamental investor then a quant fund with intensive modeling focus may not be a good fit... I am not a quant, so when I happened to interview with one of the quant teams at BlackRock (cuz I didn't know when i applied), it was really not a good experience lol
Asset Management out of college (Originally Posted: 02/20/2008)
I have an offer to join the IMD of a top BB think MSIM, GSAM, JP Morgan as a summer analyst, and another offer as a summer analyst at another BB in S&T. I know it is unusual to start a career in asset management out of college on the buy side, is it true about the limited mobility and opportunities, relative to coming over after a few years on the sell side? Conversly, if you are in trading, is it possible to move over to asset management and do research?
Most traders move over to AM and do portfolio management which has some aspect of research but obviously is more of a trading role.
I have met people who have went from S&T to AM and vise versa at the BB I am starting at in July.
Hey,
It really depends on what you want to do. Is it for a spec. product in AM or generalist?
The position is more of a research/strategy role. Is it possible, or have traders been able to move over and do strategy in AM? I am leaning towards trading as I want to learn about it for a couple of years, but my ultimate goal is to work in AM. Will HR and people in the group you turn down, scorn you once full time hiring comes around or after a few years?
What are typical starting base salaries/bonuses for AM out of college?
Why do you say that AM his more of a trading role rather than research?
I thought it was the other way around.
You say that many traders go to AM and vice versa. Typically how many years do these AM people stick at AM until they get a chance to move to S&T?
What do analysts in AM do out of college? We all know that bankers do pitch books, modeling, and bitch work and the exit options are pretty much limitless. What does asset management entail at the analyst level and what are the exit opportunities?

What are some firms that have great programs for students coming out of undergrad with training? Also, where you can come in without extensive knowledge of investing (business program).
