do lower-tier consulting firms fly economy?
i'm at a big 4 and it's economy for typical domestic flights
if you're manager+ and fly 75k+ miles per year you can fly business. also business is standard for international.
I am also at a Big 4. Depends on the project and more importantly where your home office is.
Example: I know people out of Minneapolis or San Diego who fly first class all the time because they don't have status competition and its always free. Likewise, LA and NYC consultants could have the best perks ever and never see first class once on an engagement, especially if the partner isn't billing actuals to the client.
I personally always fly JSX if on the West Coast and Southwest unless it can't be avoided, because I am a points whore who has 300k+ points and exchanges his companion pass to the next 22 year old grad after I have gotten bored with the last one.
This. But of course it depends on the client and your Engagement Partner. I worked under a frugal partner and the slightly ridiculous partner. We could having lunch with our client in a exclusive restaurant (that has at least a week of waiting list) without having to book because our partner flashes his corporate card. But sometimes we also fly economy or even go by train (albeit business class) to some of our client sites.

Nah, take greens instead of fries/ carbs, ditch the heavy dressings, snack less (we had a high 3-digit monthly snack budget on one project, tough time) and you'll be fine.

I'm talking Amex travel teams (like others have mentioned) to take care of flight/hotel problems, but also research/knowledge teams, round-the-clock design teams, dedicated support for business school applications, etc. The extent to which these firms care about their consulting staff and are willing to provide them with these tools feels very good.
How do they support you for business school applications? Do all of them do this?
GMAT coaching, essay writing help, interview help, letters of recommendation, plus the large numbers of firm alumni who they send to all the top b-school's every year.
Amex travel is pretty bad though for the service they provide - also not incentivized to keep costs down, it's mind-boggling.
