What area of healthcare are you in?

How is everyone affiliated with the healthcare industry? If you're still in school, what area of healthcare interests you the most?

I'm in strategy and marketing for a payer and used to be a consultant on the provider side.

Still in school.

Hoping to get on track to eventually be at Healthcare PE.

Or maybe even consulting after getting my mba

@Philofinancier , could you talk more about biz dev at pharmas and what it entails?

Sure, it really depends on which pharma side you're on (biopharma, Brand, Generic, Specialty) but if I'm going to paint a broad stroke it's basically market analysis, financial analysis and bit of litigation. IP is actually a huge part of this industry with all the patents and exclusivities that come along with a drug. Your answering this question: Is this strategic decision going to be profitable for my firm? Biz Dev is essentially bridging the scientists, lawyers, and market info to making 1 uniform decision for the company.

My prime objective is gain earnings for the company and that can be done via developing a product internally, partnering to develop a product or strategic m&a ie) when Brand companies buy up biopharmas to add to their pipeline (biopharmas have high r&d costs, Big Pharma has huge reserves of cash to fund these projects = > monetize later = win win). There's been a lot of consolidation in the industry and I expect it to continue to an even greater degree in the coming years.

I was previously a clinical provider (pediatric/neonatal critical care respiratory therapist) before going back to school for a master's in health services management at a top public university. I completed a summer internship in the internal consulting group of an integrated health system and will be joining a boutique healthcare consulting firm upon graduation. Looking forward to learn from others and also give out advice to those who are interested in following a similar path.
