What did people do during downtime in the early 1900's? - Robert Moses biography

Hey guys, I'm reading Robert Moses' biography and it got me thinking about norms during the early 1890's among wealthy families and their children. He was born in 1888 to a wealthy family in New York City and went to Yale for undergrad in 1905. The book discusses his upbringing and how he and his family read a lot. They would read after dinner, have intelligent discussions on culture and art, and Robert was known to check out many books on a subject and finish them.

So I was curious, was this normal for that time? They didn't have a lot of the modern technology we do today to keep them occupied, so were people reading when they were bored/to pass time? Instead of watching TV or playing video games were people reading their favorite book or checking out books on their favorite topic? Curious how much reading people did or was it just because he was so interested in the topics and had an appetite to read? I feel society was completely different and for the wealthy there was a huge emphasis on top school's for their children/learning/tutors during this time. (I am also thinking about Downton Abbey and their family which is based off 1912 in British high society).
