What do they look for out of the military

I know the military can be a good way to get into business school. I'm wondering what kind of positions they are looking for from the military? I assume officers over lower level enlisted people, but I'm wondering are they looking for people with combat experience? Are they just looking for having commanded a group of soldiers?

Please don't join the military as a means to getting into b-school or IB. Especially if youre gonna be an officer. If you have a true calling, then go for it.
I say this because it will be at least ~4 yrs of your life. So planning a "quick stop" in the army on your way to b-school just aint gonna cut it. You will hate your life and you will bring everyone else down with you.

but if youre serious about it, then you will sign up as an airborne ranger/special forces so your question is irrelevant

Leadership Ability to work under pressure Discipline

...I would imagine these are some of the core traits firms are seeking when they hire ex-military.

Are you considering joining the military for fucking business school? Are you retarded?

Protip: BSchools don't actually give a shit what you did in the military. HBS had like 70% of their incoming class of former military guys in 2011 come straight out of combat service support branches.

For those thinking that the military is a prime option for B-School recruitment...

Key skills that you will pick up in the military: 1. How to shower with tons of dudes in 20 seconds w/ out soap 2. How to eat an entire meal made of garbage in 20 seconds 3. How to destroy an in-shape/athletic physique w/ mindless distance running and pull-ups 4. How to waste hundreds of thousands of tax payers' dollars by: wasting ammo, breaking pieces of gear, going on unless missions, occupying random countries for a period of 2 weeks 5. You will build patience by standing in line for hours at the armory 6. You will learn how to clean... all day 7. You will learn how to tie your boots/shoes in 10 seconds 8. You will learn how to not enjoy your life for long periods of time 9. You will learn that at the end of the day you are a number

On a more serious note, the military has done some tremendous things for me and is something that I'll never regret. That being said, it is understandable that there is a lot of 'mystique' and mystery that shrouds some of the services, but don't be fooled its a job and with every job there are positive and negatives. Unfortunately, unlike 'real world jobs' you can't break your employment contract, and Uncle Sam will hold your hand all the way until you EAS.
