What do you hope to accomplish by age 30, 40 and so on?

I saw the thread about 30 under 30 and how Forbes is shit, so I'm going to make this.As the title says, what do you want to get done by 30, 40, 50?  By 30, I want to go out on my own. Or at least have a nice side business. Also, I hopefully am in a decent enough financial situation to get my parents a house. By 40 I don't know, I listed it because there are older guys on here, and didn't want them to feel left out.

Damn, forgot about this one. Guess it'll have to wait till 40. Gotta keep grinding.

Speak 4 languages fluently. Not kidding. I am very good at both English and Mandarin. Learned Italian for two years in college --- although my Italian sucks right now )I literally do not know a single Italian to practice, and it's weird when you keep talking to yourself in another language for hours in front of a mirror). Been learning Spanish and hopefully can master Spanish and French before I'm 30.

Persistency is Key

This is inspiring. I’ve been trying to learn French basically my entire life and have very little to show for it. Maybe by 30/40 I want to have lived in an environment where I could just immerse myself and learn it. That or get a French gf to drink wine with and complain about things all day and make smoking cigs look cool.

I'm trying to pick up Italian. Some of my relatives speak it but not as a first language, and even in the very italian neighborhoods/towns that my family resides in, I don't hear it much. With only extended family in Italy who I don't really know too well, I kind of want to keep the language alive on my end just out of respect for my cultural heritage.

Dayman?

I cause shenanigans up and down park avenue and wall street in the office lobbies ... have a tik tok account I can share as I harassed employees pre-covid and did things like hide my shoes then have security help me look for the in the entire ground floor. I think another season at this and I might get a preftigious job with a corporate vest to wear and all that jazz. Assuming I hand out enough of my resumes and business cards. Sophomore at a NYC semi-target.

I’m “one of the older guys”.

When I was in college I didn’t think too much about IB (even though I was at a school that heavily recruits that way), so my “by 30” goal was to clear $150k (my parents had worked standard corporate jobs where you usually start out at $50k and slowly move up). So didn’t have all the dreams others on here do.

Ended up at a HF in my early 20’s. Now that I’m over 30 my “by 40” goal to have enough to walk away (although doubt I would), including caring for family and kids, have time to spend with family, and get more involved in some of my hobbies (that I’ve ignored for a while...)

I aspire to go down that same path, same family background as well.

Amazing goals, even if you're being sarcastic. There's some great bucket list items here that anyone would be lucky to accomplish. God speed

Passive income stream would probably be #1 goal. I’ve fantasized about opening a restaurant which is basically a giant cash drain so I wouldn’t want to rely on it for my entire livelihood without having something to fall back on, and it would definitely be extremely hard and back breaking but it’s something I’ve wanted to do for awhile. That or open a higher end butcher shop. There’s a butcher shop in Prague that’s exactly what I have in mind: https://www.nasemaso.cz/en/

I like the restaurant idea, my uncle used to own a few, but it’s a tough business and he eventually sold them off. I would really like to own a bar. Not really for passive income, but more for fun. Maybe one where some local bands could come out and perform, either that or a mosh pit. Perhaps both.

Great idea for a post and it’s fun reading everyone’s answers. No particular order, but buy investment properties over the years and build the NW that way using 1031. Move back to my home state and climb mountains (to that point, travel around the world climbing). Give my theoretical kids the time of day and be able to share great memories with them.

Depression is a rough and I’m fortunate that I have no experience with it. How did you get involved with the volunteer work?

Am 29.

30 - Start a family

35 - Finish residency. Pay off student loans and successfully transition to a different industry (Medicine to consulting/hospital leadership)

40 - Hit $1M net worth

55 - Retire with ~$5-6M and paid off house.

55+ - Play a lot of tennis/golf, travel, eat good food, spend time with family,

I'm 25 - ideally before 30 I would like to return to school for 1 year to close out a master's in literature; and would like to do it in the UK.

I always thought I'd get an MBA which would let me take an extra year-off; but I ended up getting lucky during recruiting with a strong HF seat. The current "best" path for me is to ride this out for another 2-3 years, then transition to a smaller/equal firm in a principal/career-track role.

Investing has always been a lifetime focus for me so I will stick to this path, but it is nice to daydream about a year full of books and pints with people who don't have their nose stuck in league tables.

Pretty sure you'll find some 2-year Masters' at the uni of Oxford

Only truly have two goals by the time I'm 30:

- be sure of what I want to do for the next 20-30 years, and ideally, to already be good at it. I have a calling to L/O research, but I've still got to experience it first-hand

- build enough capital to start renovate my parents' 200yrs old house, and maybe turn part of it into a B&B kind of thing

Great thread idea; love seeing everyone else's goals. I'll add mine in. Currently 24 for context.

By 30:

  • Make at least $300k a year
  • Be married (no kids yet though)
  • Have visited 30 countries (currently at 17)
  • Ski on all 7 continents (have three under my belt, going for fourth next summer)
  • Be conversationally fluent in Spanish (I took in high school but mostly forgot, relearning now on duolingo)
  • Complete a triathlon (thinking Ironman 70.3)

By 40:

  • $2mm Net Worth
  • Family with 2-3 kids
  • Vacation house somewhere fun
  • Some form of passive side income (probably real estate)
  • Have a house large enough to host my parents for a few months out of the year without it being too crowded
  • Run a marathon

By 50:

  • Retired with +$5mm NW
  • Travel a lot more
  • Pick up more hobbies (fishing, maybe, or woodworking)
  • Spend lots of time with family
  • Write a few books

A lot of aspirations and not enough money or time, but feel optimistic about what lies ahead.

I went to Oukaimeden in Morocco in January 2019. Unfortunately, the snow levels were quite low but my brother and I were able to rent a pair of old skis from a villager and take a few runs down probably 200 feet or so. There's also a resort in Ifran (also Morocco) that is supposed to be very much skiable and is much more of a resort town.

Awesome goals here. I’m personally an avid skier myself. I wasn’t aware of skiing in Africa? I have a friend who did Antarctica though and really enjoyed it. Care to elaborate on your experiences skiing and destinations/dreams of what’s next?

Like most of us, I grew up skiing in the U.S. (mostly CA / UT) but two years ago went down to Chile with my dad and it was incredible. The skiers you meet when travel skiing are incredible and have been places you only dream of. I replied to an previous message but there are three spots in Africa you can try to ski: Oukaimeden (Morocco), Ifran (Morocco) and Afriski which is near South Africa. It's not good skiing but fun to do for a half day to say you've done it.

I'm likely headed to New Zealand next summer (assuming COVID travel restrictions are lifted) and will definitely be skiing down there for a few days. Japan is very much on my list and had a friend who just went in February and said it was incredible. Europe is easy, plenty of places to go there but haven't been yet.

Antarctica is the holy grail and definitely the most expensive. I'm assuming your friend did one of those cruises that also takes people up hills with CATs. Alaska is on the list eventually too but not nearly making enough yet to afford that.

Start a successful startup and exit by about 35.

Mid to late thirties get a partner position at a respectable firm on sandhill road.

Maybe get a masters or PhD later in life and teach at Stanford or Berkeley as a guest lecturer in entrepreneurship or venture investing.

22-death Help others achieve their maximum potential in business and life. Make some lifelong friends along the way.

That's pretty close to what I'd like to do.

Create a startup that I'd exit by 35 (remain board member)

Use the exit money to re-enter school and pursue something more artistic (architecture/interior design/fashion)

Live my life chasing my artistic ventures while entertaining my hobbies.

Don't care enough to try to plan things out 30 years down the road.

If you don't select your future, one will be selected for you.

Mid-20s now, feel like I’m on a good track career-wise. By 30, would like more financial stability (£500k savings) and someone special to spend my life with.

Need to do a thorough review of my 5 year plan though and rejig for next 5

Outside of my professional aspirations:

30 - Own an income producing property, find a girlfriend, continue to travel as much as possible, do hard drugs at a European music festival.

40 - Close to financial freedom, own primary residence, continue my education one way or another, find wife #2.

50 - Hopefully retired and committed to my charitable/volunteer interests, remain in shape, find adult hobby (sailing or something idk), find wife #3-4.
