What does geographic expansion really mean?

PE firms like to emphasize being able to help management expand operations overseas as part of the value-add package. I'm curious though, what is the work in involved in a geographic expansion. What does the day of a PE professional helping management expand look like?

In simple terms there are really only a few ways to grow operations

A) Channels

B) Joint Ventures

C) Direct from existing business

D) Launching a subsidiary / regional focused division

So the answer here more than most is really variable, as not only does it depend on the fund, the company, the management team, the macro environment, the geopolitical environment the region of the world, the country etc.

I.e. while a lot of PE is really helping companies build processes I don't think you will ever talk to someone who has ever entered two international markets in the exact same fashion or the same international market with two different companies the same way.

At the associate level it can range from identifying international markets that may be the best to priotize, to working directly alongside the CMO or country manager to develop marketing plans. I know a couple people who as associates spent 6+ months internationally in their second year... I'd recommend asking someone who is staffed on a portfolio company that has expanded internationally at the fund you are curious about what their experience was like
