What does "Meet if you're in town" mean?

Had a phone interview 2 months ago and have been told to check in every week or two for an update. There has been no updates. I will be in the companies location in a few weeks and decided to email my contact who is a pretty high level (director) saying ill be in town and if your team wants to meet let me know. Got an email back saying that they have had some interviews and that this person didnt know the results of them but if I was in town reach out and this person would be happy to meet with me and introduce me to people.

My point is, is this essentially a pity invite? Or could there be more to it? Another wrinkle is that in my current position I often work with this company so it would be possible i run into them although i am a much much lower level

Unless I am miss understanding this post, it sounds like you are going to be introduced to some people who may decide to bring you in for an interview if they haven't filled the slot by then.

If I am miss understanding your post, this person is happy to line you up with the people you wanted to meet which is a great opportunity to network etc.

Even if it's a pity invite meet with them. This is networking. I constantly meet with people that I'm not doing a deal with, that I've only been introduced to by a third party, and that I'm not making an ask of or vice versa. And I have for a long time and even if I don't do something with them right away or even in a few years I know them, they know me and I've done a lot of business with people I've met years before and kept in touch with. They work in your industry and if you're aiming for a job now or in the future or if you advance at your current company, their company or another one altogether it will be one more contact that you've met face to face, which is a much different and better thing than exchanging emails or a phone call.
