What Excuse Do I Use?

I am currently working full time in a MO finance position, and have been trying to move to a FO position on the West Coast for some time now.

I have a boss who does not like us taking days off for anything. I am taking a week long vacation at the end of the month and he already was displeased with it, as we have a ton of work to be done.

I have been offered a 2nd round interview on the West Coast ( I am in the Midwest right now ) who wants to meet at their office. This means I need to take at least 2 days off to get there, interview, and get back. I have 3 days of vacation left, but all vacatoins have to be approved beforehand (and this would not be approved). I have not used any sick or personal days however I know my boss would flip a shit if I called in sick or told him I needed two personal days.. no way in hell I would still have a job, imho.

What excuse can I use / have you used in the past to get time off work to go interview with another firm? I want to leave my current firm, but only once I find another job on the west coast. Not sure how to navigate this one. Thanks!

The death in the family is, bad karma or not, among your only means - pretty much anything else - family gathering, birth, vacay, etc, should have been known about beforehand.

Therefore, I think you need to either 1) claim a death in the family and hope karma stays on your side, or 2) claim a bad illness - pneumonia, flu, etc and start selling a few days in advance to prep the team and, again, hope karma stays on your side.

Also, is this a 2nd round or final - you might want to check the 2nd is the final before running out there since you probably won't be able to get back out again.

Might be a bit out of taste, but save the "death" card for later.

First claim that a grandparent is very ill in the hospital and you need to visit them. If its a first round only, even better because if you get called back for the second, you can then kill off that same grandparent and claim they succumbed to their disease, grabbing yourself an extra couple of days.

cancel vacation
Yep, no brainer. Do you want a shot at FO or not?

Make minimal use of vacation days, as you never know when they'll be needed.....

I have been at the firm for over a year and have not taken a day off for vacation or a sick day, including working on Xmas. This vacation has been planned for a year - hotels / flights/ etc are all booked and paid.

Really hope this isnt the only option. May have to go with the gpa is reall sick and im not coming in.

Thanks! Yeah, the problem on the death excuse...

I have a buddy (works in IB for a top bank) who had a family member pass away and they asked for a death cert or clipping or something. Not saying they would do that here, but man if they did lol.

Same thing happened where I work. Boss asked for a death cert or the obituary

That is seriously fucked up. You guys should quit if that's the kind of environment you're working in. Life's too short to put up with people like that.

People tend to think life is a race with other people. They don't realize that every moment they spend sprinting towards the finish line is a moment they lose permanently, and a moment closer to their death.

I had a grandparent pass away this year and my bosses sent flowers and made a sizable donation to the charity my family had asked to send gifts too. I was blown away with the kindness - had never thought of the fact that it would have been super embarrassing if I was lying.

I had two grandparents pass away, and two close friends die, one in a car accident and one in of disease this year. I was asked "was it sudden?" or "you can't die by hitting a divider with your car lulz." Some fucking people.

This is why you play nice with the med students... when you make friends with them, they can easily get you an excuse in a couple years
