What finance jobs can be done from a laptop at home or anywhere?
I intend to have invasive surgery in the next five years that will require me to take six months to heal. I will still be able to use a laptop in the process of this surgery. What finance jobs can I get or build in which I can work from a laptop? Building a business is also a good option as well, but which finance industry will allow me to wrk from my laptop.
I can't really think of any finance job which is a pure work from home situation. I suppose there are some in accounting or FP&A functions at large companies like IBM where people are scattered everywhere and you lucked out. Maybe if you're your own day trader?
Pretty sure IBM just called their employees from marketing and finance departments to go back to their offices.

Ah, I literally just plucked a large company to use as an example. Honestly, every person I've dealt with who works from home is only ever working half the time anyway. The other half of the time is doing other personal stuff...
Pretty sure you can do like equity or some other asset research. Maybe you can directly work for a firm doing research or in the least, write articles for Seeking ALpha

Actually a lot of micro-cap work can be done at home. If you don't need a place for employees to stay during the day then all you need is a rent-an-office on retainer for the rare presentation that can't take place at the client or investor.

non-HNWI wealth management. Currently doing it as a part-time job, and all I do is sitting on the phone answering phone calls, calling and e-mailing clients.

My cousin is doing corporate clients pension sales at the higher levels in the company, and he introduced be to the boss of the wealth management department. They needed students to work as interns for a whole year. I got in touch with the boss and met her two times before I got the job with no "formal" interview. It seems like they have high demand for students, because we do quite a lot compared to the hours we work, as we put off a lot of work from the authorised financial advisors. And they value us highly.
There are probably many banks that need part-time financial advisors. It is pretty relaxed work, as I can choose my own hours, when and how often I work. And the pay is also pretty good. It is basically private wealth management, nothing fancy.
I work from all over the world, with 2 laptops (Macbook Pro and IBM Thinkpad).
Sometimes I do a few trades from my iPhone. Maybe I'll work 2-3 hours / day, doing some research or writing a position thesis report. You probably have to raise some $ and start an investment fund.
Mine isn't a big fund at all, but the fees/percentage take allow for a decent income while letting me live in a different country every 2-3 months.

Day trading, starting your own business, connecting people through your own "consultancy" are some jobs you can do to keep yourself occupied.
It's probably overstated but in terms of starting your own business, the necessity to work from home would probably only give you the option to work on something at least somewhat close to tech/software development/websites/blogs/consulting.
Honestly if it's not going to be for a while you're probably better off just taking the job you want to get, and then taking paid leave when you have to get your procedure done. I don't think they can ask about medical when they hire you and worst case scenario you'll have a few years of good experience below your belt so you can get back to it once you're back on your feet. Haven't been in that situation but it seems like a sensible narrative to explain you had some good years at a good firm and then were forced to leave (hopefully not) for a procedure and you're hungry to get back into the game.
Medical leave of absence....? You should be focussing on recovery.
Not really. It gets really frustrating when you're doing nothing after a few weeks. Usually, you can't play, take part in intensive activities, walk or move much, etc. The only thing you can do (from my experience) is get addicted to your morphine drip, play computer games and eat shit food (depending on the type of surgery).
Drugs, games and food? Sounds ideal.
Trading, Research, Entrepreneurship can all be good options. However, what I'd recommend is doing what you want to do and get very good at it. Then, stay at your employer for at least a year or two (if possible) before undergoing your procedure. If you add value and have built up some goodwill, places will do their best to make it work.
The main problem you're going to face is that most places will put you on unpaid medical leave. If that's not what you want you're going to really have to have the trust of management.
Another option I'd consider is corporate finance. While many large organizations are pretty old and conservative, those with larger teams might be able to help craft a flexible role for you (if you've earned it).
This is what I'm in the midst of. Great employer and for whom I've done a great job since working for a year for them. They don't have work from home policies but have been flexible and are letting me work from home when my ACL surgery, in which I expected to be out a week, is turning into 6 weeks. I know that's not 6 months though, but I think any employer would be flexible in this day and age for an exceptional finance employee.
There are a couple of researchers/data engineers who worked out of the NYC office for several years before moving their families to a different part of the country to work entirely remotely. They come into the NYC office about once a quarter or so for a week. They have a track record of doing excellent work so my firm had no problem with them working remotely.

I'd also suggest, taking a job in the years leading up to when you have to have the surgery. If nothing else, for the medical benefits. No way I'd have a surgery and pay for it outta pocket.
Then you could always try to work something out on the side you're out on medical leave.

I've been doing various IB analyst work (pitches, teasers, modeling/comps) as a freelance contractor. There are plenty of people looking for such services.

I would suggest checking out AngelList (angel.co). They definitely cater to tech jobs, but they have a bunch of finance/biz. analyst/data analysis roles and a lot of them are remote (you can specify all that in the search function). I have been working two remote jobs over the past year (1 of which I grabbed off of AngelList).
