What is better? Middle office at MS/GS etc or Online startup Entrepreneur

Hi guys, quick question here.

While in my Semi-target college I co-founded an online start-up business that does several million in revenues per year. It now has 13 employees. After graduating I took a job at a BB doing middle office work and was laid off several months later in July.

Do I have a better chance of going to a top 10 school and eventually going into IB/VC/PE/Consulting if I continue with the business or if I take another middle office job at a Bank such as GS/MS etc..

The business would still run without me, and ill still get paid my salary. My gpa in college was 3.55 and I had a Wealth Management internship at Citi amongst other EC's.

Middle office will not prepare you for front office jobs and will not increase your chances very much for a top MBA, as the job is not as hard to get. You can do it from there, but it is not as sure as from consulting, banking, etc.

I think, for you, it would be a step-back, going back to middle office. To get into a top MBA, you need good stories, besides good reasons to get into the school. I am sure you can tell lot better stories about your company, than some middle office position, plus in order to get into VC, having an entrepreneur background is almost a must, at least in order to advance...KEEP ON RUNNING YOUR OWN COMPANY!!!

Thank you, that is precisely the answer I was hoping to get. I have some good stories to tell from my experience of running the company. Certainly a lot sexier stories than saying one time a hedge fund didnt want to pay up their Margin Call so I went down there myself with a gun and forced them to pay up the collateral lol..

you can't "do everything," as much as you think you want to. you are about to go into an entry-level job in a massive corporation where you're a cog in the machine, dealing with office politics and TPS reports and other petty bullshit. not only will this not work (it takes a long long time to make it and years of working alongside total assholes if you want to go this route), you will probably be miserable. go have fun with your own company. co-founding a startup that now makes millions is pretty amazing. don't throw that skill away. start another one if you are really that restless. eventually go into VC.

You are absolutely right.. the higher ups were complete dickheads for the most part who thought that by having their 1 promotion due to them being there for a few years meant they were better than me. DOnt get me wrong though, in the business units (vs ops) I am sure there are some extremely intelligent people generating tons of money every day due to their skills. The job did make me feel miserable since it was such complete BS that I wanted back into actually using my brain for anything other than the menial tasks I was assigned to do.

Thanks for the kind words though, I definitely see myself as a startup guy and i think VC would be something extremely interesting to me.
