What is going on in Austin?
Just was contemplating moving to a new city and thought of Austin. Obviously, theres been a massive shift of companies moving there. However, I noticed that housing prices are skyrocketing. I looked on Zillow and other sites, and there are so many homes within 5 miles of the CBD that have prices higher than Cali and the Northeast. Anyone hear live in Austin? Hows the traffic scene with the massive influx of people?
Yuppie Californians who ruined their state have come to vote in the same people in Texas.
Nah more like normal Californians sick and tired of woke Californians escaped from the hell hole that CA is becoming.
Austin nowadays is almost as liberal as SF...
Same issues they have in CA - the city isn’t zoned for the density to supply enough housing for all the demand, so prices skyrocket.
Traffic is pretty rough as well, though this is less an issue of density so much as infrastructure - the roads are still built for a city the size of Madison but now the population looks more like Pittsburgh.
Great city and it’s definitely developing alonside the population growth, but naturally there are some growing pains
Hook em
All the Californians are moving to Texas and ruining everything, pretty much. Even the suburbs 1 hour away have bidding wars and 100+ waitlists for LOTS, not even the homes. Just the dirt
The traffic and homeless problems are getting significantly worse. Cali people ruining our state and trying to pass the same dumb liberal policies that ruined their own.
Texas cities have kept a lid on house prices by being very loose on planning regulations. Austin, being the liberal "oasis" in the state has always bucked the curve on this and even at the beginning of the current boom was way pricier than say Houston/Dallas (source: my exes uncle bought a $2m place in Austin in 2016, it was average).
Now as everyone's pointed out Texas has attracted yuppies from California etc and cultivated its own tech scene. So you have this influx of high earning, liberal minded types basically throwing fuel on the fire.
Its insane. I had no idea it was to this level. Houses going for $1000/sqft. These are freaken silicon valley prices. One story ranch house with 1500 sqft selling for $1.5m.
I really don't see the appeal, unless you're in tech and have no choice. The other major Texas cities offer plenty of corporate opportunity for a fraction of the CoL, and still have the same "cultural" offerings if that's your thing
Just moved from Austin to Chicago and I am satisfied. Austin traffic is the worst. Truck drivers don't mind to get in accidents. You can see car accidents everyday. Homeless ppl ask money on the road every corner. Only good thing about driving is the gas price is under $2 . Your car get steamed under the sun most of the year. Good luck.
Austin is the most overrated city in the country. 10 years ago, the hippies dragged down the city and the “corporate sellouts” made it somewhat tolerable. Now the corporate sellouts and their wokeness makes the hippies and their flower power feel like a walk in the park.
