What is lowest level of MBAs that have good buy side placement? (Low gpa)
Hi all, looking at shooting out applications to do an MBA in 2021 or 2022.
I am currently working in a distressed debt/special situations role for an UMM/Megafund PE shop. Our placement tends to be very good (recent people I know of who did B school went to HBS (x4), Stanford, and full rides at CBS/MIT but an MBA is not needed to advance.
My goals for an MBA are to be able to explore other career paths/investment verticals while not hurting career development in my current line of work.
The problem from my end is that I screwed around in college and I graduated with a sub 2.5 gpa from a U.S. state school. I also did grad school immediately after where I graduated with a 3.7, Latin honors, good ranking among my cohort, with good grades in quant classes. I took the GMAT a few years ago and got a 750, but I will need to retake that. My ECs are also generally good (charity boards, employee foundation, college athlete).
Question is - what is a good target range of schools that have strong buy side/consulting placement? Unfortunately with my GPA I understand HSW is out the door, I am open to European/Asian schools as well.
I am curious to know more this as well.
.
so how did you get from
[quote="Associate 3 in PE - Other"] so how did you get from MBA, my network is very poor compared to my peers.
Seems like you answered your own question. Your peers who did B school went to H/S or finance focused M7s... seems like that will be realistic for you too, and that is also the tier where buy side placements happen. Sure your ug GPA is bad, but if you get a 750+ GMAT thats not going to stop you. You are the kind of person that makes the bottoms 20% GPAs happen,
Following this, bump
Strongly empathize with the low GPA. But come on man, H/S/W not "out the door" at all. Apply there too, especially if you can replicate your previous 750+ GMAT.
For Europe and/or Asia buyside, INSEAD comes to mind.
Good luck man
Since this didn’t get any other hits, OP here, appreciate the sentiment from everyone on my admissions chances.
For schools that I have seen outkick their coverage at other shops: 1. NYU Stern MBAs seem to have really good representation at certain buyside shops, 2. Tuck also has OK buyside placement as well, probably a bit better than expected.
Happy to add others to the list but not sure what else there is. I would think UT Austin’s MBA might have good O&G placement due to lack of true competition but not really too sure there.
