5 Guys is above and beyond Shake Shack. I don't understand the Shake Shack love. In CT we have a Plan B burger place- it's better than both. I also think 5 Guys is better than in-and-out.

Like the unadjusted- only with a little bit extra.

I, personally, swear by Shake Shack, but I'm a much bigger fan of those completely unknown burger spots, and for me, the cheaper the better. Fact is you're eating the least healthy shit imaginable at any of these spots, so go for the gold. In order:

  1. Shake Shack
  2. White Castle (so cheap it actually hurts after you eat it) | Kennedy Fried Chicken if you're in any NYC hood
  3. McDonalds | In N' Out if you're on the WC
  4. 5 Guys
  5. Other shit

I'd have included Umami burger, but that's not a cheap burger. Once you cross the $10 meridian of planet burger, you're talking artisanal and fine cuisine.

You lumped McDonalds and In N' Out into the same rung??? 5 Guys is below White Castle and McDonalds?? We're also talking about burger joints and fried chicken made your list?

You're either a Russian Spy trying to come off as American, or you have the taste buds of a Mushroom (aka you eat shit).

You don't know about Kennedy Fried Chicken? Not KFC from the commercials, you spoiled suburban brat. I'm talking about the good shit - the spots with an illegal Somali dude making burgers, rice, and fried chicken in the same grill, and where a full meal will cost you $4. If you don't know about this delicious heart attack / food poisoning on a plate, then you've never been to the Bronx, Queens, or Brooklyn. It's okay man, it'll be alright.

lol I noted the difference between Kennedy and Kentucky, but thank you for erring on the side of caution you dock worker.

I've had the unfortunate pleasure of traveling into the boroughs to dine at Kennedy's a long time ago. From memory it would not make my top 50, nor McDonald's. I think your burger order got shuffled like the freight containers you were unloading on Dock 4A. In N' Out is by no means a 10/10, but is far better than McD's, White Castle, and Kennedy's (period). Do note, I'm a midwestern and I love my grease spoon burgers like any red blooded American.

Shake Shack hands down - reasons why: 1) better ingredients (namely, in my opinion, better meat, buns, and secret sauce) and 2) so much cleaner to eat (5 Guys in my experience is too big, too messy). 5 Guys has way better fries I'd say though, like way better.

Agreed, 5 Guys fries are dangerously good. It's just those burgers that kill it for me. I can feel the stroke coming at 5 Guys, whereas at Shake Shack it's just a mild, angina-esque pinch in the chest.

In-N-Out blows.

In no particular order: Black Iron Burger, HB Burger, The Counter, Burger Joint (in the Le Parker Meridien), Black Tap Burger, 5 Napkin

Cheer up, Bateman. What's the matter? No shiatsu this morning?

From the East Coast so I've never had In-N-Out, but 5 Guys is definitely number one on my list. Recently had BurgerFi, pretty up-scale burger joint that I thought was surprisingly good. Burger was great although the bacon could have been better and the fries were amazing. Only downfall of BurgerFi was how expensive it was. $50 for 3 people: split a big thing of fries, two double patty burgers, one single party burgers and two milkshakes along with one soda.

What is that $8/burger, that's not expensive.

There's one close to Dupont I think I've been meaning to try, is it any good? Also have you tried that knock-off In-n-Out place in NE or wherever?

There is a knockoff in-n-out?! I need to find this place. I have never had a chance to go to the west coast so I have always dreamed of an in-n-out burger and what it might be like. (In case it isnt obvious from the username- I love cheeseburgers).

Z-Burger is awesome. I dont know if there is a difference between the locations, but the one in Tenley is awesome. Only ever went to a different location once, but I was drunk so I coulda been eating cardboard and it woulda been good.

Any of these chain places mentioned let you specify how you want your burger cooked? I'm here for a good time, not a long time -- and I like a nice pinkish hue to my meat.

Is pink less healthy for some reason?

Poe's Tavern is probably one of the best I've had, not a big chain though.

Yeah Poe's Tavern is really good. I live right near one.

Shake Shack and Mooyah

Mooyah isn't as well known but they've apparently been around since 2007. Fresh ingredients, great fries, shakes. Seriously blows all the other fast casual places out of the water.

In-n-out was incredibly underwhelming. There's what...2 oz of meat in there?

Wahlburgers, on the other hand, was surprisingly really good.

lol that show Wahlburgers is hilarious

I'm from the East Coast so I've never had In-N-Out. But Five Guys is better for what you get. You could argue that the quality of the patty at Shake Shack is better. However, for what I usually get when I'm there (shack burger, shake, and fries) the price does not justify it. It's almost $15 for the meal and the size isn't spectacular. Five Guys fills me up personally and their fries are a lot better.

Shake Shack has recently expanded into the west coast (a few locations in SoCal so far, don't think there are any in the Bay Area yet). Other west coast people may crucify me for saying this but man is their burger a lot better than In N Out. I think a big part of it, at least for me, is the bun. However, I don't think there is any comparison regarding the fries -- In N Out trumps Shake Shack easily (especially if you consider their gluttonous Animal Fries option).

In the past, I've never really liked comparing In N Out to Five Guys. Maybe others here will agree with me. The latter is a whole different type of meal (a lot more filling) and is simply a "different" type of burger. In other words (for me at least), there are times where I'm in the mood for an In N Out burger and others for a Five Guys burger -- I usually am not deciding between one or the other. One thing I love about Five Guys (aside from the peanuts while you wait) is just eating a massive burger with melted cheese stuck to the aluminum foil wrap!

Just my two cents, since I'm (a) not from the US, and (b) have only been to the WC. Must say my favorites are Umami Burger and Super Duper Burger. Also Five guys > In n Out anyday.

P.S. if anyone was looking for the best burger in the Philippines, check out Boutique Burger Kitchen

Putting in my two cents as a West Coast guy...

Lots of misinformed mouthbreathers in here shitting on In-N-Out, but it's not their fault I guess, OP's comparisons don't make any sense.

A double-double at In-N-Out is $4 and a single cheeseburger is $3. Wow, you get less meat than an $8 Five Guys or Shake Shack burger? Please no more huge surprises for me today, I can't take it. There are people in this thread making direct comparisons between In-N-Out and $15 NYC burgers like Black Tap, Islands, and 5 Napkin. I can't come up with any excuses for those people, unfortunately. Truly shocking that a drive-thru fast food burger is lower quality than a 1/2 pound house ground short rib-chuck blend burger at a sit-down NYC bistro. One would think people on this forum would be better at making "apples-to-apples" comparisons.

In-N-Out is the only one of these brands that is mainly a classic drive-thru fast food joint. It competes primarily at the same price point with McDonald's, Burger King, etc. and it's definitely fresher and tastier than any of those places. It has a loyal cult following in California because in high school when you have limited funds, that's where you drive to with your friends after high school to get the most bang for your buck. Ain't nobody in high school paying $20+ checks at Umami Burger.

Even after getting older and making more money, it's still a top choice for when you don't want to sit down somewhere and get a quick bite, you can be in and out the drive-thru in 5 minutes. Makes zero sense to put it in a head-to-head contest with more upscale sit-down restaurants.

Shake Shack is ridiculously overpriced and, frankly, over hyped. I prefer In-N-Out and Whataburger for the value (the taste is comparable). Hopdoddy destroys all these places though, where you can get a much better quality burger and fries for the same price as you do at Shake Shack. Idk how Shake Shack gets away with it honestly.
