What kind of school could I get into?
With this experience, what could I get into?
- 2 years Bulge Bracket Middle Office work
- 2 years boutique Investment Banking doing private placement offerings.
- CFA Charter
-
650 GMAT
-
Middle of the road State Undergrad degree - 3.4 GPA
- Lots of volunteer work both here in NYC for the homeless, and also abroad during undergrad.
Based on the above, what are top places I would have a shot of getting into?
UT, UVA, UC BERK, Top State MBA's (if you raise your gMAT to 680)
Your background doesn't look too bad; you likely have a good story around moving from mid-office to front office. Volunteer work is gold, especially if it is over a long period of time (and not for b-school optics).
My advice is to work on your GMAT. A 650 is okay but doesn't scream "I'm smart" the way a 700+ score would. With a little study I moved my GMAT from a 680 to 720 and I'm sure I could have done even better. It is worth the time (espeically if you went through the time getting a CFA - a better GMAT could be more valuable).
My other advice is not to seek advice on what schools to apply to on a board like this. The only people that matter are the admissions committees of the schools you apply; people on here are likely to give misguided information rather than real help. What I would recommend is picking ten schools you really want to go to and apply to them. Be sure to have one or two "safety schools" if you need to go next year, otherwise be patient and work on your "story". B-school classes are filled with people, not stats. Admin committees look to read about who you are and what you want to be; what you have done is only part of that.
Good luck!
