What life choice seemed rather immaterial at the time, but ended up drastically changing your future?

Thread header says it all. Can be job related or not, same goes for the action being beneficial or consequential.

One time, after becoming an All-American at the University of Alabama, I ended up enlisting in the Army.

On the way to training, on the bus, I sat next to this guy named Bubba. At the time, I didn't think it would lead to much, be we talked about shrimp for what seemed like months (but only like a couple of minutes). Long story short, I took the information from that conversation, bought a shrimping boat and became the shrimp king of the south.

Ended up putting my son on the school bus and this weird feather flew by.
