What makes more sense: IB (BB) to Consulting (MBB) or Consulting to IB?
Fellow Monkeys,
Edited my earlier post.
How transferable are skills that a strategy consultant will learn at a job if that person decides to switch to IB later? Is a switch from MBB to IB better (logically) than doing a switch from IB to MBB ?
Thanks.
None of this makes sense. Just because you have an interest in both doesn't mean you HAVE to do both. Pick one you prefer and run with that.
Thanks. I have updated my post. I am not saying that I have to do both but trying to see how transferable are skills for a scenario in which I have to move from 1 industry to another.
I don't understand your questions. Why would you join one of these industries only to exit to the other?
Its still a hypothetical discussion. I have updated my post to gather more information on what will be exit opportunities if I want to move away from finance sector altogether.
To my knowledge, more people start in IB and after some years move to MBB consulting rather than the other way around.
This. Have seen plenty of people switch to MBB from IB. Can't recall a single person (though I'm sure it happens) that did the reverse.
I know several who went consulting -> MBA -> IB. Never seen a direct lateral.
I saw both Consulting ---->IB and IB ------>Consulting.
However, the latter seems to be more common.
Consulting to IB or IB to Consulting: Which is more common (Originally Posted: 03/18/2011)
Which switch is more common post b-school? Do a lot of bankers who do an analyst stint hate their lives and make the jump to consulting, or more often is it vice versa? Looking for percentages as opposed to nominal numbers, since there are more BB IBD analysts then MBB pre-MBA associates.
Mostly curious what people see anecdotally and sense is the more common switch. I know the two groups dump on each other, but wondering if one repels people more.
I see consulting switch to IB more frequently (or just going to b-school/PE)
basically the same schpeel from my consultant friends... -- (opinion before starting --> after 6-12 months on the job) 1. I thought the travel would be fun --> it got tiring / it sucks to be on-site in rural Ohio with townies 4 days a week 2. I want a work/life balance --> not at MBB 3. I will have better exit options --> debatable... (and I do not consider getting picked up by a client company to be a legit exit opp) 4. no bonus... fuck --> FUCK
