need more information...
location? size of firm? do their advisory services include alternatives? how many clients? etc.
you are looking at a position with an institutional consulting business. Riemann's questions are right on and are needed to help answer your question. Consulting firms generally don't pay all that well especially for people in research roles focused on traditional investments (i.e. not alternatives). The reason is the that institutional consulting business is highly competitive and the users of such services generally are quite cost conscious. If this is not a consulting business the pay might be different that what I described above.
Houston 5 Yes ??
if this is entry level, i would guess it was in the 45ish range with 10k bonus (max).
most consultants in this space get a fixed annual payout from their client base. more specifically, they do not get carry. this will limit the bonus potential for all positions unless you are doing sales.
to put things in perspective... the state of pennsylvania pays about 1 million a year to cambridge associates for venture capital consulting services. state of pa has a couple billion tied up in the asset class.
municipalities will certainly have much smaller checkbooks.
this type of job is still great because you will be building relationships with institutional investors as well as fund managers.
the downside is that many of these firms generate a substantial portion of their revenue from several clients. if a major client pulls their business, the firm may run out of cash quickly.
bottom line... not a bad way to start up your career in investment management.
I am about to enter my 3rd year in IM and this job pays 60k with bonus from 20k-40k. I am working on level III CFA.
