What should I do this summer? - Two questions
This past week I discovered that I'm interested in management/strategy consulting and I have nothing lined up for the summer
I'm about to graduate from [removed] with a B.S. in [removed]. This Fall I'm going to [removed] for [removed]. I live in [removed].
I have two questions:
(1) Is it still possible to land a summer internship, and if so, how? Obviously I'll apply online everywhere, but I almost feel like this is a waste of time at this point b/c it's already May and none of these companies (that I know of) even recruit at my school. I tried searching on Linkedin for alumni, but practically all I could find were IT consultants. For the few alumni I found that aren't IT consultants, I'm not really convinced that messaging them on Linkedin will garner a response other than "apply on our website".
(2) If I don't end up landing an internship, will I still be competitive for SA recruiting this Fall? Do I have a shot at MBB next summer?
Also open to econ consulting.
One more question, how important is networking for consulting?

dont think you have a shot at MBB next fall. But apply anyway. I would shoot for Accenture, Deloitte S&O, Booz as more realistic matches. You will have a tough time if you're looking to go into finance later though as a consulting background won't prepare you very well.

Damn not even a shot? Appreciate the honesty though. I'd be content working at any of the firms you listed as long as I wasn't doing IT consulting. I'm not interested in finance anymore.
You don't have a shot at MBB, but definitely contact all of your alumni on LinkedIn. Because you don't go to a target, there will be very few kids interested in MBB, and your alumni will (should) definitely be willing to talk to (and help) you - they won't get very many requests, and they'll have a chip on their shoulder about VT.
You'll also probably need a better story than "I found out last week I was interested" - what, an angel came down and whispered in your ear that Bain is the answer to your woes?
It's too late for formal recruiting for this summer, but some small place might give you a shot (likely unpaid). Decide after that if you're still interested enough to chase MBB.

I have found this to be the case, it may be different in the UK but when I have went through the Alumni database, I have found the Finance Alumni to be more than helpful in talking, meeting and possibly helping me get an interview (working on that). I think it is because like has been mentioned, it is very rare that someone gets in touch
Ok so I guess I shouldn't even expect to get a 1st round phone interview at MBB this Fall. That's a little depressing. What are my chances at other management consulting firms (for next summer)? What exactly should I be doing to make myself more competitive for Fall recruiting? I'll contact VT alumni, but obviously it's going to be very difficult for me to find something this summer. Would it be weird if I contacted Columbia alumni too given that I haven't gone there yet?
lol yea of course I would never tell anyone that in real life. I wanted to be honest here b/c this is an anonymous forum. Also to clarify, it's not as though consulting is my life calling or anything. Obviously I can never know whether it's right for me until I actually try it. But right now out of all the career paths available to me (or at least I thought would be available to me in the Fall), it seems to be the most interesting. However if it is unattainable, then obviously I need to start looking at alternative career paths. The purpose of this post wasn't just to ask about this summer, but also to gauge my chances for Fall SA recruiting for next summer. I just assumed that because Columbia has great recruiting for consulting that I'd have a shot at it.
its all networking bro. I had a great PE internship and it did nothing for me in the end. The only way in is to know someone or go to harvard.
