What should I do with my summer?
Hi everyone,
Relatively new here but didn't know where to put this.
So, I'm starting my final year in October, so that gives me around 3 months off.
I'm interested in IBD, but failed to get an internship this year, hence, I'm looking to apply next year at a few firms. Obviously, I wanted to do something this summer to be productive and to add to my CV.
A summer internship this year is way too late so what can I do that would help set me up for next year.
I do tuition part-time for 3 days/week but it's not the corporate experience I wanted. Also, earlier this summer, I set up an eCommerce business that's doing fairly well (£1k+/month) but asides from my business - this business doesn't really add to my CV either. Other days, I spend them sleeping and doing nothing which is making me fairly depressed.
Besides from that, what can I actually do this summer to be productive, and set me up for recruitment next year?
Like you said, it's too late to get an internship for this summer anywhere. So what I would do is reach out to local shops in your area (whether they are IB or not) and just cold call them and ask them if they would have need of an intern for the fall of this year, or the spring of next year. That way, even if you don't have IB experience, you will still have something to bring to the table when applying in your final year.
Sent out 20 cold emails to senior members at some small shops. Got 0 responses which kinda hurt.
Gonna send around 80 next week and hope for better.
it would be better to reach out to the more junior people you usually have more luck there. When you send more emails again next week, send emails to those 20 shops again, but this time, email the more junior people that work there. Also, I know it can be disappointing, i went through the same thing. you just gotta keep trying. The right internship will come eventually.
I'll definitely reach out to the more junior members. When you were in the same situation, did you get an internship via a junior member?
My one for the summer was through a junior member, the one I have for the fall is not, but in my general experience you get more answers when you reach out to junior members. Also reach out to as many firms as your can. You have to accept the fact that a lot of them will not respond, not matter what you do. So reach out to as many as possible increase your response rate.
Apart from sending cold emails, in my opinion you could try to add something else to your CV too. Start learning a new language, add more knowledge to your specific work field or start doing something completely new. All these things add something to your CV and could be very useful in the future as well. Employers are not just looking at your past jobs but at your skills too.
I'll defo give that a shot! I've started to take a financial modelling course so I hope that adds to my CV. After this, I might start Python as I have some coding experience before, and I think a language might be too long. Thanks for the advice!
Coding with Pyhon is a fantastic idea, personal experience, even if some banks do not use it. You can play with it and build up financial models too. If you like tv series, just watch them in other languages. Large banks just want a little knowledge about this topic, if you are not in sales with people in other countries.
Just keep in mind that work experience is not just THE thing that makes your CV better when you start. Take care!
