Meaning, outside of academia and government, what jobs are available for economists to actually be economists - not econ majors to go into other industry. Specifically an econ major doing economics in the private sector.
Well it depends. Are you an undergraduate calling yourself an economist or have you completed a PHD?
I know at our BB we have an Economics team that deals with overall Firmwide Economic Planning. Haven't interacted with them much so don't know specifically what they do.
I know one of the managers that I work relatively closely with that used to work at an Economic Consulting firm... isn't exactly what you were looking for but nothing is going to be "pure econ" outside of working at the FED perhaps. There will be consulting-esque / non-econ aspects to any job.

I would be an undergraduate but would getting a P.h.D increase the opportunities in the private sector?

Is this true of most BB's (I'm assuming you're referring to boutique banks)? Would it be possible to find an internship in this sort of work?
