Morning start time
Wednesday is my first day as an analyst in an IBD group.
I haven't been told what time to show up (just to show up at reception Wednesday morning).
What time should I show up? (What time do most analysts show up in ibd?)

I would call and ask what time they need you there just to be sure
Get there at 8:15. It's your first day, there will be HR shit to do.
Afterwards, get a feel from the group. Try and show up by 845 for the first week at least until you get a feel for what people do normally.
8:15 is ridiculously early for banking, NO ONE will be there except a few MDs.
On your first day I would get in at 9:00am and then after that see when the other analysts usually come in.
My group its between 9:30 - 10 depending on how late you were there the previous night.
I know standard working hours in the U.S. are 8-4pm at most places. Is banking different? I talked to a few IBD guys who had to come in to the office at 7:30am when they had this one strict MD. Then he left and now they come in at 9 to 9:30 every morning.
On your first day, you should probably show up no later than 8:30am. While many bankers don't show up til 9:00am or later, you will likely be greeted by H.R. and start your day with paperwork. If you show up at 9:00am, you're going to make a very bad first impression. Everyone always shows up early and sits around for 15-20 minutes on the first day, it's expected.
nightflarer, I don't know any company in any industry with standard working hours of 8:00am-4:00pm in the U.S. 8:00am-5:00pm or 5:30pm is more realistic. Also, from what I've seen, West Coast companies frequently start the day earlier if they frequently work with East Coast clients / offices.
I agree with most of the previous posters - show up at around 8:30-8:45 - unless of course you know the group starts earlier (I know of groups that get in as early as 7:45 and then as late as around 9:30 on average). So unless you know otherwise, a safe time to get started would be around 8:30. Expect a bunch of paperwork, computer issues, and work to get acquainted with the system and such. Get to know the team more, what's going on in terms of deals and work flow, etc - use the first day to tackle all of the odds and ends (especially computer and phone issues) and take your time with it. Good luck.
Surely they would have been impressed that you were still early though?
Just curious how you're starting in early March. Is this a BB/boutique, lateral, etc?
just choose a time where you think you will be the first one in the office, capped at 8:00 a.m.
It's your first day, waking up 1 hour early doesn't kill you. Then get a sense about when other people show up, [assuming you are a analyst], be the first junior person in the office for like 1 month then just show up like the average analyst.
There is nothing wrong with showing up early -- even really early on your first day.
There are many things wrong with showing up late.
Not sure why there is a discussion on this.
Jackofalltrades shut this thread down.
First day of work, show up early.

What time do people show up for work, I have to be at work by 8am (LA) but i hear in NY people don't start until much later.
I'm in LA and it's a 9AM to 915AM start for me. 10AM if i had a late night
I've heard that In NYC, IBs are usually in at sometime between 8:00 to 8:30 AM (since usually they have soo much to do and the fact, they want to be in their office before their VP). 9:00 AM is the latest
every analyst I spoke to said that the official starting time is around 9 am, but most of them don't get in to the office until 9:30, and on the late night days they don't get in until 10 or so...altho one guy told me he doesn't show up until 11:30 on late night days
i dont go in until 10-11am after late nights (3am or later)
do you guys get in trouble or somthing for coming into work late or is it accepted if you worked late the previous night?
Besides the person that you did the work for, how does everyone else know whether you come to work late because you had a late night, or you simply slept-in?
that's what it boils down too. if you do good work and if your associate/vp trusts you, then you can come in late, that is if you don't have a early-AM con-call.
ppl talk and recognize/reward your work.
7am in HK from what ive heard
I come in at 10 AM even if the night before wasn't that late.
I'm in between 7-8am, maybe 8.30-9.30 after a late night.

What time do you walk out of the elevator? (Originally Posted: 01/04/2015)
Very curious. I'm wondering what time everyone walks out of the elevator to begin work each day. Please state:
1: Status (First Year Analyst, Second Year Analyst, Etc.) 2. Location (NYC, SF, LA, Etc.) 3. X:XXam
Summer Analyst NYC 8:40AM
First Year Analyst NY 8:45-9:30am
2nd Year Analyst (Only analyst in office tho) Atl 8:30-9am
PM in PWM Bible Belt 645-7am
Desk analyst (3rd year) London 7:15
1: Second Year Analyst 2. NYC 3. 11:00am
Living the dream! When do you leave usually?
8:30pm, usually a bit earlier
Is this IBD? What group and type of bank?
Yes BB IBD. This happens when you're a 2nd year with an offer
Awesome
Incredible you got an offer with such poor reading comprehension
He asked "is this IBD", I answered yes. I selectively chose to not reveal group. Not about reading comprehension.
Still can't read...
The question was what time do you get off the elevator in the morning.
If you actually read the whole thread, you'd realize that someone asked me a followup question on when I get out.
trading analyst 5:00 AM Bay area :(
If you're talking PST, then that's amazing. I was on the desk around the same time in EST...
Institutional Sales Asst 5:55AM LA
1st year 7:30AM (Get out at 10PM) NYC
I hate my group. Lateraling ASAP.
If you are trying to lateral because of the hours, then I'll just frankly say it could be a lot worse.
1: SVP 2. NYC 3. 8:35am
1: FI MO, Associate 2. NYC 3: 8:30Am
by desk do you mean breakfast nook?
1: 1st year analyst, MM M&a 2: LDN 3: 8:40
9:30-10 seems so late for IBD first year. Is this common?
Summer Analyst, MM IBD Midwest 8:50-9am
Don't expect this to change when I return FT.
MD, PE East Coast 7:30-8 if I'm heading into the office (not traveling or don't have a breakfast meeting but if I'm in town I try to do breakfast meetings at 7 or earlier to get those done before the day starts)
I'm surprised how late people go in. I feel like 8 is slacking. But I always feel bad for the West Coast capital markets/trader types. When I lived in SF I had a few friends who were in the office at ridiculous hours in the morning. Of course they were done by 3 pm.
