What to major in? (Undergrad)
So, I'm going to be going to IU's Kelley School of Business next year, and right now I have my indicated major as Finance. I know a lot of people double (or even triple) major and I was wondering if you all think that would be beneficial. Would it help me get an internship and a job in iBanking later? Or would it be smarter to only major in finance, have a reduced course load (and probably a higher gpa), and focus more on other things?
I think it's better to just major in finance and dedicate the rest of the time rounding yourself as a candidate and networking.
Triple major, become president of your fraternity and your school's finance organization. Also make sure to start a charity organization while you are on campus, learn financial modeling on your own, focus constantly on personal and inter-personal development, exercise frequently to stay attractive, follow the market, and at least 1 industry in extreme detail, especially major M&A deals. Also will help if you pay your way through school and pick up unpaid internships.
Good luck, just make sure more than anything... Have Fun!
Underrated advice
If you go to IU's business school and don't start a bar near campus that gets shut down, are you really doing it justice?
On a serious note, Finance with accounting or economics minors can't go wrong. Or maybe gets a Comp Sci/Math minor to be honest.
The Math minor will drop your GPA a bit if you don't give it your all, but it opens up so much more: masters in financial engineering, actuarial/risk jobs, masters in more technical fields, computer science arenas with proper comp sci self study, etc.

Yeah, I know IU has a econ/math double major program (that my brother is actually doing right now, he's a senior) and I was thinking about that. But that basically doubles my course load which is why I was wary. You think I should just minor in econ, accounting, or math instead of double major?
I think I could do the math minor fairly well, I'll have to talk to my brother because he's actually doing it right now so he'll know more about the math courses at IU, but I definitely like the opportunities it would open up. Good to have those in case I want to switch to something later in life.
The thing about math minors is that you actually get the real benefit if of a math degree: Calculus I-III, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Statistics/Probability - which is all you really need in this world 90% of the time.
Those classes also allow you to be 'eligible' for quantitative leaning masters: think Comp Sci, Statistics, Data Analytics, Economics, etc.
It opens you up to more STEM than just business in general, which to me is true diversification with minimal risk and great upside potential. Also IMHO mathematically inclined people can make some truly cool financial models.
Finance should be easy to keep a GPA up high. Math minor will stretch you a bit, but if you are dedicated to school (not having part time work to get through school, etc.) it won't be terrible because it's one math class a semester. Plan the harder classes (real analysis, etc.) with easier finance/business courses and you'll be fine. It'll probably raise your GPA in those business classes because you'll be use to working harder for an A in those math classes.
Above all else you should try and maintain a very high GPA. I would recommend double majoring or at least minoring in mathematics or computer science.
If it would severely hurt your GPA, I would advise against it though.
I'm not going to pin a conclusion on you, I did math & finance and never regreted over it. but I rather offer a few guidelines:
Trust me, I want to take classes that actually interest me and probably will take a few. Which is another reason I didn't know if it would be a good idea to double major. If I did, it would literally consume all my course opportunities.
I would like to learn, but being able to have an edge is also really important to me, especially because I'm not going to a target (Kelley isn't a target, right?)
