What would be a good career for me?

Hey guys,

I think that next year I'm going to go to UT-Austin, and I was wondering what are some good careers for me.
I have always been a huge math and science guy, so going into a field where I get to work with computers and such would be nice, but lately, I have been getting REALLY interested in business. The main concern I have is that it seems that the only high-paying careers in business are consulting and i-banking, and I don't really have a shot at either for a couple of reasons:
1. I'm going to probably go to UT unless by some miracle, I get into Cornell: not exactly HYPS, which is required for I-banking and such.
2. I think I want to double major in either EE or Chem E and Econ. Thus, especially since I'm not a genius, my GPA is going to be quite low for the good consulting and I-banking firms.
Although I know that I have to pursue something I love (which is why I'm still majoring in EE), money is a big deal to me. I don't want to be stuck in the average engineer zone and forever be doomed to a middle class salary, nor do I have to be CEO-rich. I'd like to be able to make somewhere between 120-150k, so are there any other jobs out there that can allow me to reach these goals, and combine my love of business and tech, with more emphasis on business, or at least come close?
Btw, as an aside, I'd like to remain in Texas and work somewhere in the Houston or Dallas area because the cost of living is a lot lower.
thanks for the help!

Why not apply to the business school at UT? It's a pretty easy curriculum, if my memory serves me correctly.

It also has a major called "Engineering Route to Business." -- http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/advising/degree_info/erb.asp

-------- Right now this is a job. If I advance any higher in this company, then this would be my career. And um... Well, if this were my career, I'd have to throw myself in front of a train.

Dude, if you like EE or ME go for it.  Personally I'd do EE and a finance minor or something (if thats possible at UT) then you can go engineering or business out of undergrad.  I know I'm really interested in tech banking, but even moreso tech vc and pe and I would kill to have an EE background.

Plus, engineers make decent money and mba programs LOVE engineers.

Also, IB and consulting are possible out of UT, but you'd have to be REALY goog to go BB.  I know there's a lot of MM energy stuff in TX which you could do as well with a business degree.

if engineering is looked favorably by MBA programs, is it possible then to do marketing, managing or something for a large company? I think having a tech background would be helpful for these types of jobs, because knowing how the technology works can definitely aid in marketing the product, but is there good money to be made in these types of positions? Obviously, I won't be CEO of Intel or anything, but if I can get a job in marketing at these larger companies or manage small companies, is there good money to be made?

Also, someone mentioned MM consulting firms. I'm guessing that stands for Middle Market? Can anyone enlighted me a bit more about these firms in terms of how much they pay, the exit opps, etc.? Also, how difficult is it to land one of these positions? See, consulting would be perfect for me, but I'm just worried that because I might do EE, I won't be competitive enough.

freeloader:

Pretty much any post-MBA gig at F500 pays around the 100K range. Take a look at McCombs MBA placement report to get an idea of what companies and the range.

can you link me because I can't find anything from a google search. Also, are these F500 company jobs hard to land? What are some examples of the jobs you can do, or do you mean literally anything from finance, marketing, etc.?

if possible, more info on the MM firms would be appreciated because I'm really wondering about them

hey freeloader, on that link you showed me, what do the people in the manufacturing section do? Are they managers of a tech company or what? Also, how hard is it to get jobs in fields like commercial banking or any of the jobs in the finance section besides investment banking and accounting?

well besides the manufacturing industry, anyone know about the finance section? I'm thinking that stuff is more your speed than the manufacturing stuff, although if anyone has answers to the manufacturing stuff, feel free to answer.
