Do you guys go on Wall Street Oasis from your work computers?

I just started my internship and it's pretty boring. I'm nervous to go on certain websites though because I don't want my superiors to think that I'm slacking off (even though I obviously am).

I'm on it right now but if I was an intern I wouldn't do it unless I was in an office with a closed door. read investing websites instead.

beyond proxy zero hedge seekingalpha value walk sum zero motley fool morningstar CFA institute (should be some free publications in the research foundation part of the site)

of course the ideal is to just go ask for work, rather than sitting on your ass.

I do, but my firm doesn't care as long as I get my work done. On top of the work they have me do I try to have one side project that I came up with where I'm offering value independently of the normal work, which really helps boost people's perceptions of you as an employee. I'm full time, though. I agree that interns should be working, you're only going to be there for a summer it's not that bad...

Pfffft- I'm at work right now. I have my own office and my screens face the window so I could be doing anything on the computer. I normally just browse the website while I'm on hold or something. I don't actively try and waste time - most of the time that is.

A really stupid thing to do as an intern (in most cases) if you want the FT offer, especially so early in the summer. I went on WSO on my work computer when I was a SA only around the 8th week of my internship.

Go ask for more work. Keep in mind that if you have work already and it's boring and you're slacking off, people will have an idea of how long something should take and will take notice if they think you're a slow worker

At work and in life is about image and perception. You want to project yourself as a go getter intern regardless if you are obviously bored. You never want anyone above you to perceive you as a lazy slacker or a smart ass.

As an intern your time is used to learn and impress others about your positive attributes. If you're that bored, go talk to other people and ask them what you can help them with. I hate interns that just do the bare minimum and then complain about being bored or not learning enough when it is their job to reach out to others.

I did since I got my FT offer. As long as you perform at the level required for you to achieve your goals, you might as well spend whatever downtime you have chilling. I would however caution against excessive use of Dealbreaker if you work at MS. As far as I know, it has been banned on their network a few times due to high frequency of usage (thus the "welcome home, MS" sign on the site).

Even when you are FT it is all about perception, if every time a superior or even a higher up from another group/department that you do not work directly with walks by your desk and sees you on surfing the web, they are going to form an impression of you and your boss will know the time bonus season/reviews come around. You don't want your boss saying "so and so is a top performer" and having another person rebut "oh really because everytime i walk by he's always checking sports stats."

As an intern I would limit internet usage to strictly to work but if you have some down time financial/world news can't hurt, anything else just use your phone. Another important tip though is keep your phone in your pocket while at work, too many young people can't go an hour without checking their phone believe me this stuff gets noticed.

Also: ALT M and ALT-SHIFT-M shortcuts are your friend.

Thanks everyone! Just for some perspective, I'm a sophomore and wasn't able to secure an IB/ investing related internship this summer (not making excuses) but I'm doing something quantitative at a big company with a great brand name. That probably eliminates my ability to get away with going on websites like seeking alpha. What I've been doing that is finance related is that I have a capiq account from school so I've been reading the 10-k and 10-q of the company and it's competitors so I simultaneously am learning how to properly read those while also learning about the company and its competitors. I feel like that's the most productive non-work related thing I'm gonna be able to do.

Honestly I'd spend the time reading about the industry or getting a more technical background.

99% of the time they'll be overlooking it all. But when or if they do actually look at your traffic, make it go "shit kid's actually learning" and not "shit kid's a lazy ass".

Personally If I didn't have an intern that had a nice rack I would want them to hole up in the corner and not get in my way.

+1

If it's true that 'who you know' is the most important thing in one's career, then I look at it as investing in my own future.

Get busy living

offices (and schools) will only check an individual's browsing history if they have a VERY important reason to do so. i.e. you've been missing for a month, they think you're plotting an attack of some kind, etc. same goes for checking email history. they track internet activity, but never look at it. i work for IT at my school.

Schools and businesses are very different. Banks and the like usually just block shit they don't want you to use.

I'm embarrassed for being on this site, it doesn't have a good reputation in our group. So when someone walks by I Ctrl + Tab to dealbook or something, and then Alt-Tab to a big-ass model on my second screen and start selecting cells like crazy, to create appearance of busy work. The big-ass model is usually something from a month ago...

Hilarious, thanks for sticking with us.

Really want to know why we have such a bad rep with your group though! Are you able to tell it without giving yourself away?

“Millionaires don't use astrology, billionaires do”

This website wouldn't exist if people were concerned about posting at work. What else are analysts going to do when putting in the requisite face time? There's only so many "Grantland" articles written every day...

Anyway, by the time your company looks into your browser history, they've already planned to fire you (unless you're looking at something really egregious).

Guy in my program asked me if I "was CRE on WSO." If that shit happened at work I'd be a bit more weirded out, but at the same time I don't post anything controversial on here short of "swear words."
