When does undergrad GPA stop matter
I have terrible grades (under 3 if not counting transferred credits) in college but still managed to get a full time job in investment banking. But I was told that this could still get back at me in the future say for lateral hiring into a PE position.
So could anybody tell me how many years of professional experience I need to make up for my shitty undergrad GPA? Also is lateral hiring at every PE firm so rigid or is it a case by case situation?
Thanks in advance
It never stops mattering
Once you are in IB, let the work you do show your aptitude. Make up for it by being a kick ass analyst. Better than anyone else you work with. Be the person people want on their team and it won't matter that much.
Of course, if you lateral or go into PE people will still ask about it. By this time (~1-2 years) you should have a track record of results that usurp the GPA.
It stops mattering if people hiring you know you — resume won’t add/detract much. Also if you a known track record which is why you’re being considered in the first place. Generally, by the time you’re 30, nobody will care about your grades/scores and if they do, you’re seeking the wrong job.
