Where do I go from here??? - Finishing a certificate in foundations of accounting and auditing

Ok, so here is my predicament. Im 24, I have a BS in Finance, and I am going to finish a Certificate in Foundations of Accounting and Auditing(A graduate program that gives you a fast track to qualifying for a MS in Accountancy/Tax) in December 2011. I am browsing schools that offer Accounting Masters programs and I am realizing that alot of the best schools dont offer a MS in Accountancy/Tax, only a MBA with a focus in Accounting. I want to get some advice from some other professionals to see which route will give me better experience/knowledge

MBA in Accounting vs. MS in Accountancy or Tax

Give me your opinions, and let me know if you want me to give you any other information.

I have uploaded some schools that I like that offer a MS in ACC/TAX, so any comments about any particular school even ones not listed on here are greatly appreciated.

UIUC is pretty much the top school for accounting. They have a plain MSA. Don't waste 2 years doing an MBA in accounting.

You are almost guaranteed a big4 gig if you do the MSA at Illinois. The only exceptions are people who either get a 3.0 or less GPA, or just dont submit any applications.

What is your ultimate goal? I'd recommend a masters for almost all cases. MBA in Accounting is more of a 2 year MAcc than a true mba (and employers know that). No reason to spend 2 years and another $40k.

I can't see your list, but cries is right about UIUC. I chose Indiana, Ohio St has a decent program, UT is great, I think UVA has one, Miami (in Ohio) and some others. It's been ~5 years since I went so I don't remember the list but most of the top public schools had programs.

When I was at IU I think all students with 3.0 did get Big 4 offers if they applied. I was only a marginal candidate at the time and I got 4 interviews and 5 offers from the Big 4.

Lol, wut? Interviewed for 4 positions, and somehow got 5 offers?

Big4 are so shallow.

Hello There

Choosing between these two degrees depends upon why you want to pursue either of these degrees in first place. The degree Master of Business Administration is not the same as Master of Science. The MBA is a general broad degree covering a wide variety of business issues and training students for careers in managing any area of business.

The MS is a degree that concentrates study in a specific field, such as finance, accounting, taxation etc and trains students for careers in high level staff positions often involving research. So MS degree would provide you focussed and concentrated information and MBA would be having wider subject range and you would study subjects regarding management also apart from accountancy or tax.

Thanks

Hi Kavita,

I appreciate very much your contribution to the website WallStreetOasis.com. Can you please tell me more about the degree program of Masters of Business Administration? What subject types does a student in Masters of Business Administration study? What are some career trajectories that are reasonable for a holder of a degree in Masters of Business Administration? Your guidance is much admirable and appreciated.

Thanks

Also, you will want to skip the MBA for now, so you can do it later (at a school know for its MBA program).

We both know you will want to kill yourself after 4 years of audit. Why not save the MBA for when you want to transition out? After all, there are only 3 purposes of an MBA:

1.) Drive school's revenue

2.) Student networking

3.) Career change or improving qualifications for promotion within your industry.

If you have any questions about UIUC, feel free to PM. I just graduated about 1.5months ago from the MSF. Amazing experience.
