So I'm a recent grad from a non-target state school. It's not a complete non-target -- the school sends 4 or 5 kids every year to BB IBD, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to how many kids there are in the undergrad b-school. I've been networking pretty heavily for about 8 months now and I've made major inroads with a former high-profile MD at UBS. Problem now is he is one of the guys who ditched that shithole last week for another firm. I'm pretty sure he doesn't start working for his new firm for a couple months because of non-compete agreements and whatnot, so I'm thinking he can't really pull any strings for me until he starts his new gig, and I'm not really willing to sit on my ass all summer pissing my parents off at home.
This got me thinking, though, with everyone leaving UBS, there must be opportunities for off-cycle recruiting there. Yeah, yeah, the comp is garbage, but I'm just trying to get my foot in the door right now. Is it worth it to ask my contact if he still has friends at UBS who can get me an interview? Or does that come off as too desperate?
Why are you bashing UBS when you have no other option? Yes, the bank is going through its struggles (to say the least), but if you could at least get in there temporarily, it won't be as bad as rotting in your parents basement all summer.
Advice - get into UBS (if you can) and wait for your MD to land at his new gig - he will probably be more interested since you might learn a few things there.
Bottom line: UBS (although not optimal) > no job
It's not that I don't have any other option. There are plenty of firms that are on my list thanks to my networking over the past few months. It's just that UBS is the only BB on my list (maybe it won't be a BB in a couple weeks...). And, yes, I may be talking shit about UBS (who isn't these days?), but I know damn well not to bite the hand that feeds me (if it ever comes to that, which it hasn't yet).
The real question I was asking, if we can steer ourselves away from that little sideshow, is whether asking my MD contact about opportunities at his former firm is out of place or not.
And MoCo, piss off. Who doesn't feel the way I do about UBS these days? Just because comp is down doesn't mean I wouldn't jump at an opportunity to work there. I'm just echoing the sentiments of others. And I have far and away a better GPA than a 2.8, so shove your assumptions up your ass.

You should definitely ask your contact for referral ASAP and make to stay on him until he gets you some names and numbers!!!!! And stop with all the "desperate" remarks..nobody gives a shit....this is your effing future..OWN IT!!!
