Where should I live in NYC?

I know that there are threads but most of them are geared towards midtown and Fidi. Where should i live if I’m gonna be working near Plaza hotel as a first year next year? Preferably I’d like to be either walking distance or less than 20 minutes on subway? Budget is less than $2k and I don’t mind having roommates. I know that there are a lot of factors but I am curious if any of you have experience for this area in the city.

Lots of options. I'd cast a wide net and get the nicest place you can, anything above Union Square should be under 20 min in the morning (and like a 10 min car home at night). In this market even at $2k you're looking at a lot of dumpy places unless you start flexing bedrooms

- Upper part of Midtown would be walkable, I personally wouldn't want to walk over 10 blocks for IB so say 47th and above

- the area around and just south of Columbus Circle IMO is one of the nicest areas (subway access, easy to get downtown, grocery, shopping, good bang for your buck), and a quick beautiful walk along the park to Plaza

- both Lenox Hill (~70s streets) and Murray Hill (40s) will be quick commutes - just make sure to stay west enough to be near the subway stations, parts of Murray Hill are 10 blocks just to get to the subway
