I'm thinking if the search bar was put above the Forum Topics section, there would be room for a small status indicator for: new messages, bananas, etc... at the top right

Yeah, I just sent myself a PM and I can only see if I have new messages if I go to my inbox.

Also, you can set it up to email you notifications for when you have a new message. Click on "My Account", scroll down to the box that says Privatemsg Email Notification, make sure it IS checked, and there ya go.
