Where to find Legal and Tax advice for startups

I just started my own quant finance consulting shop. My background: heavy STEM training, spent some years building quant models for a major consulting firm, and now have found my own contracts/clients.

So far it's a one man shop, so the LLC is essentially a pass-through with which to pay me. However, I am going to start taking on new people over the next 3 months and expanding beyond my main client.

So now I have to think about things like contracts, payroll, legal protections of my own and the firm's assets, etc. Stuff that I don't want to leave to DIY halfassery.

What's the best way to go about finding accountants and lawyers? I can probably spend max 20K on such expenses on a yearly basis; I am running very lean right now.

What should I look for? What should I ask for?

Well... Did you take any law or accounting classes? My law prof from MBA gives free legal advice to former students (and in some cases representation). Can you pursue any of those avenues first? If you have minor small business needs, try to rely on your network. Know any CPAs or JDs?

I'll do what I can to help ya'll. But, the game's out there, and it's play or get played.

Network, network, network! It's much easier to find the right attorney and advice for you if you ask similar businesses or startups. Plus, having a reliable and trustworthy attorney and cultivating a relationship can mean a lot down the road. His success would become dependent on helping you succeed, like a true partner in business. I would advise against LegalZoom or similar big-box legal consulting, unless your needs are very specific and one-time only.
